Went to Horsley Park Gun Shop for "just a look" yesterday and to check out a .270 Savage Axis in Stainless they were advertising. After a bit of a chat with the salesman and discussing what ill be doing with the rifle (100m - 200m target) and the fact my 14 year old daughter will be using it also he talked me into buying a Howa 1500 .223. Loved the way it shouldered and the bolt felt a lot smoother to operate etc so now i'm just having to wait for the PTAs to come back and i can bring it home. I already have a .22 Marlin XT22SR at another shop waiting for a PTA also so hopefully my safe starts filling up soon.

Onya mate - great value rifle in a kick-a$$ caliber.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

I brought a pack of Hornady 60gr and a pack of Buffalo River Blitzking 55gr home with me but i'll get another 2 or 3 different ones when i collect the rifle and test them all. Doing the same with with the Marlin xt22, i have CCI Velocitors, CCI minimags and Winchester Subsonics for that.

Ditto to what Kelsey Cooter says. They love the Buffalo River ammo in Blitzkings. Havent tried the Gamekings, namely because i bought the 900 round can and am working my way through it. My 18 and 19 yr daughters both use it for vermin control, roos etc and love it. No kick and lazer accuracy.

Great choice of a $value rifle.

How’d you like the Savage Axis? A mates got one in 22-250, and sometimes you gotta work the bolt like ya stole it, and it’s got the heaviest trigger I’ve ever come across.

My mate had one of those Axis from memory it too was rough in the bolt movement (real bindy) and the trigger was ordinary to say the least (no doubt all those issues could be sorted easy enough with a bit of elbow grease) I never shot it so can't comment on how it shot.

The axis was a fair bit lighter than the Howa. Bolt action wasn't as smooth as the Howa and the Axis had the hard plastic stock where the Howa had a soft rubber feel stock. The Axis was $595 in .270 only with 4-9x50 scope and stainless barrel but for the extra $50 i liked the feel of the Howa.

Sales guy may need to check his facts on the Axis..Savage claims all centrefires are made in US.Most rimfires in Canada. Or maybe He just prefers Howa.Anyway good choice of rifle and calibre,What is twist rate on the Howa?..

I think your right. The "made in china" was something completely different. My mistake.
