223 with wooden stock

Post by Zappa » 12 Oct 2018, 1:39 pm

I'd like recommendations on a 223 with wooden stock. Nothing against synthetics butts but i don't like them. Maybe one day I'll pick one up and convert.

So strictly sport target shooting at the range up to 300yrds, and occasionally taking down a fox, hare here or there at my mates farm .

budget under 1400 AUS and has to be accurate. Stainless steel barrel preferred but not necessary.. cheers. 8-)

G'day Zappa,
I've got the 24" 1:9 bull barrel. The Walnut stock was such a beautiful piece of woodwork I took it off to protect it from getting bashed about, and put the action in an XLR Element chassis.

Silky smooth action and is capable of far better accuracy than I could manage.
With a tuned hand load of 50gn Nosler Ballistic Tip projectiles even I can get a result.

The pic is best group I've managed, and I'm no bench rest one hole shooter, this is a 5 shot group off the bonnet of my car at 100m. The square is 1 inch.

Can highly recommend a CZ527 Varmint, mine are both dead accurate (.223 and .204), trigger is awesome and you've got a few different options, I've got 2 and another 1 on order (.17Hornet) and also want a 7.62x39 Carbine to replace the Howa 1500 that doesn't have open sights. I love them!

The CZ 527 .223R Laminate Varmint has a rather flat Forend Stock and is rather nice using a proper bench rest for the range. Still a nice fit in the hand for out n about or use with a Bipod.

They are a nice weight as the Varmint Barrel is not anywhere as heavy a profile as say the Tikka/Sako type. More in between a Sporter and true Varmint Heavy Barrel and just as accurate.

I have a 455 22lr with the three barrels on order. So while I was originally leaning towards back to the CZ ie 527, I was wanting opinions on others.

Might have to narrow it down to the CZ and Howa. If I could afford OUR Lithgow for about the same coin I would also throw that in the mix. Maybe I can source a used one.

Which one in the Ruger range can I easily source in NSW\ ACT ? I like Ruger, shot many times with them at the range and their handguns. Well balanced.
But like many, they have tipped heavily into the *synthetic stock route.

* my personal preference. nothing wring with the synthetics. \ poly stocks. imo.

Find a nice second hand 223 to your liking, there are plenty floating around in the region $500 - $700.
Get it rebarreled with a quality barrel, preferably 1 in 9" twist, and a 'match' chamber.
You will come in under budget.
You won't be putting up posts begging for magic loads to make your rifle 'shoot'.
You will be happy for a long time.

I find people are asking too much for their used guns.
By the time I inspect it, get it transported to a dealer, pay their transfer fee and get some minor work done, were at a new price.
I could get a brand new, HOWA 1500 for $850. for instance.

You might get a scope in the deal but I wouldnt trust it. it may have been knocked about and abused.

Good suggestion anyway if ppl selling their used wares were prepared to come down a bit.

Yep saw someone selling a ruger precision rifle in 308 GEN2 with a 1k scope for 3k.... seeing the rifle was 2k new. For a second hand you get rings and a Harris bipod. That's not really good deal.

Now he has gotten the bare gun for 1750 negotiable. It's a bit more reasonable
