Long range rifle - 1,500m+

Post by BOOF » 23 Jan 2014, 1:13 pm

Just wondering what's the best rifle for getting out to 1,500m+

Price is no option but I'm not a millionaire so I don't want to pay more then I did for my house.

Just saying.

The best rifle? A custom single shot rifle like Stolle, Stiller, Barnard action and the longest barrel you can manage

Bit of a strange question really. Any rifle can shoot 1500m but only the best custom guns are accurate enough to do it well. Some top end factory guns will do it well too but its the guy preparing the ammo and pulling the trigger that makes the difference

Expect to spend around $4k on a rifle, $2k on a scope and rings then another $1k on reloading gear then chances are the barrel will need replacing at around the 1000 round mark if you are shooting a cartridge with the legs to stay supersonic out to 1500m. You're talking 300wm minimum

Can you consistently shoot sub 1" groups at 200m with your existing equipment? If not chances are you'll be wasting ammo trying to hit anything the size of a refridgerator at 1500m

Don't mean to sound patronising but its hard enough trying to shoot well at 300m let alone over 1000m

Nothing's the undisputed "best" in every aspect. Calibre, accuracy, cost, availability, etc. all effect the balance on what you'll get.

Are you already an accomplished shooter or starting out?

Custom build or off the shelf?

7mm Rem Mag, .300 win mag, .338 LM, .375 CheyTac, .416 Barret and more calibres will all take you out to 1,500m

A dozen brands make capable rifles of doing it. You could buy a $3k Savage or a 10k Steyr, or anything in between.

You'll need to give us some criteria for this, something to work with... Can't list every single possibility for you...

Might be best if you look up your state regs

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=73

But you don't need a 50cal to shoot 1500m.

No hoops, just a pta form for a cat "b" centre fire not self loading.

Farm I shoot on is rather large and we have a few mobs of heap of pigs that are very hard to get to and and destroying place.

Now we can hopefully get them effectively from a greater distance.

You should be able to take more than one pig out per shot with that. Whats factory ammo worth per round for a 50 cal ?

I can just see it, you show up at the SSAA range muzzle brake and all and the Range Officer has a heart attack. The rest of the shooters get an attack of tumescence in their nether regions.

must be some big porkers you're shooting out that way jthunting, enjoy the toy, good luck with the shoulder too :? ....

back on topic, price no consideration or not, If I were after a target 1500m+ 'rig' and didnt want to cut corners....there is a pun in there coming up shortly...

I would consider the barrel first and source no less than a cut rifled barrel. Lots of guys in the US are doing such work including at least one supplier in the UK that I'm aware of.

Then the action, well you could buy a proprietary action there are many out there, plenty info here http://www.6mmbr.com/actions.html.... What I would do however would be to pick up a Savage Long Range hunter, as opposed to a stand alone Savage Target Action as the LRH is the only way to find a large diameter/long action Sav....:
Image

You'd probably save on one of the custom actions but have a spare barrel, brake and stock....

BTW, you dont need a LM to get to 1500m, but I'm sure you know that... ;)

I would stay in the 338 range of cals as they are easier to get pills for and will do all that you require.

If you want a boomer get a 338 snipetac as it will take you way past the 1500 mark.
338 edge
338 edge plus
338 lap
338 lap improved
will also get you to 1500

To get the best out of them they will have to be throat ed long which means single feeding them .

No mag feed as will be to long for mag so i suggest you build 1 to your needs not a shelf rifle.

You will be looking at 4500 to 5000 plus scope and accessories.

My son has a snipetac and loves it but way to heavy for a carry rifle and i was going to build a 375 cheytac but no good hunting pills so sold 408 tac action .

So going to build an edge now in stead just waiting on barrel to turn up.

Have shot targets at 1250 yards with 7mm Dakota with great success but would not shoot deer at that range with them .

So you will have to make up your own mind what you want to do with this range and go from there.
