Model 70 Extreme Weather - Sight in/first shoot

Post by Kumaabear » 18 Jan 2019, 1:19 pm

Hey, thought I would throw up some groupings and comments from the end of my sight in session with my new rifle, its a 30-06 and this was shooting 150g factory core-lokt's

The 5 shot group was at 100yd (I pulled the flyer)

The 3 shot group was 200yd

Some brief thoughts about the rifle from an admittedly inexperienced shooter (first time shooting)

I was surprised that at least for me it was not more punishing to shoot, many people seem to think 30-06 is way too much to start with. The stock design and recoil pad it comes with helps here. Shot 40 rounds over a few hours and felt like a mate had punched me in the arm once which I can deal with.

Trigger is nice and crisp, not heavy enough to move the gun and feels nice and tight.

Bolt is nice and smooth and has a very positive mechanical feeling on chambering and extraction, its nice being able to gently eject rounds so they don't go flying off and damage casings.

The barrel gets hot very fast but its a hunting gun so ill take the lightness and its really not meant for heavy range use, 4 shots and its pretty cooking. I ended up leaving almost 10 min between shots (38c still day) just so I could keep shooting without even longer breaks.

The 06 is no big boomer but you are going to know you are alive after firing 40 shots at the bench. I have not seen a Winchester trigger that didn't benefit from some fettling from your gunsmith. Being a new rifle, has the copper fouling settled down? How many shots have you fired in total?

Ive fired 40 rounds through it total.

There was no evidence of copper fouling build up when I cleaned it after 40 shots, patches were black with maybe the very slightest tinge of green on the first patch which seems normal and could well have partly been residue from my bronze brush.

It cleaned up very easily, the bore felt very smooth on the patches after the 2nd patch.

When I cleaned it before shooting, and there was green copper on the patches from I assume the test firing at the factory, much more than came out after my 40 shots.

I did not follow any special break in procedure and it shot incredibly well from the beginning, I used federal blue and white box to sight in, then ended up grouping with core-lokt's since its what I had with me.

It liked the federal a lot better, the 2nd and 3rd shots ever shot were hole through hole but way off target as the scope was not zero'd

The trigger didn't bother me at all but that could be a case of me not knowing any better I suppose, I could detect the most tiny bit of creep before it broke but barely noticeable and there wasn't any follow through I could feel, I may lighten it to the minimum of 3 pounds it states in the book.

I am super keen to find somewhere to practice where I can be prone or in a more realistic hunting position than at a bench, the range up at hill top / southen highlands rifle club looks like it could be a good place?

I was going to buy a Winchester EW. I was after one in 308 though and Australia is very low priority for delivery of Winchesters.
The distributor didn't have any in stock and they can't give a time frame of delivery unless it's pretty much in transit.

The weight is good in these. I handled a different caliber in a store and I think it was around 7.2 lbs, thereabouts.
The guys in store were saying it's a little heavy, which is surprising.

What's your main hunting going to be with the 30-06?
You should throw up a pic of your rifle too. I could use a bit of eye candy to stimulate me ;) :D

Oh, I forgot to mention something.
You said you were shooting on a hot day and you had barrel cool down time.

You can improve the cooling if you're able to stand the rifle vertically with bolt out. Heat rises so it's easier come out from inside the barrel if it's vertical rather than laying horizontally.

you might still give it the 10 mins, but it should cool more in that time.

After 40 rounds a new barrel will be badly copper fouled, try a dedicated copper solvent like BoreTec CU, Pro Shot, Sweet 7.62 or Ballistol Robosol. You should be getting bright blue patches out of it, in your case you may need eight or ten soaks to remove it all.

After your comments, I went and picked up some Hoppe's 9 Copper Remover. You were indeed correct, there was a fair amount of copper in there, am in the process of removing it now am up to the 4th soak :)

Will throw some pics of the rifle/scope up once I am done.

What did you use when you cleaned it after 40 rounds?
Just something like Hoppe's Bore Cleaner?

^This stuff is what I cleaned it with after 40 rounds ^

It says it removes copper but it didn't really seem to, maybe I didn't leave it long enough, but didn't see more than the most tiny amount of blue streaking, I need to get a Nylon brush I think, hard to know when its clean since I only have a bronze one and it could be giving me false positives.

Also as far as what I am going to hunt with a 30-06 :P well I sorta figure it should be good for anything in Australia I point it at within 300-350 yd or so assuming I hit it right.

With the possible exception of buffalo, but maybe even that with a 200g barns and a toasty load could be a thing id have to look into that harder, them things seem dangerous and mean and I don't even know where I would find them.

Mostly I'm after goats, deer (all types) and pigs

Main requirements when I was picking the rifle was:

-Synthetic stock that I actually liked the feel and look of , this was hard to find as they all felt pretty "plastic" except the bell and Carlson which felt nice and solid and looks really nice for a synthetic in my opinion.

-Stainless barrel, fluted nice to have but not a big deal

-.270 or higher so I can go for deer in Vic without stressing over what type it is / if its legal (I go 4x4/camping up in the high country whenever I can find the time off work)

-I already had a Trijicon 3-9x40 Accupoint and together I wanted rifle and scope to weigh somewhere in the region of 3.5-3.6kg unloaded so not overly heavy, scope is 380 grams so rifle had to be 3.1 - 3.2 kg at most.

-$2100 ish or less ( I went over this unfortunately because the AUD dropped after I already decided and prices on everything went up)

As you mentioned getting one in .308 was nigh on impossible, between that and kind of being a bit of a history buff I ended up deciding I would just go the 30-06 since it still met all my requirements. 7mm-08 could have also been a thing but they had none of them either, .270 (in stock) seemed a bit too specialised and lacking bullet weight options especially in factory loaded stuff.

I am not a fan of Hoppes copper remover, try one of the solvents I mentioned earlier. To check on copper fouling, get a Cotten ear bud and insert it into the muzzle of your barrel. Use a torch and reflect light off the ear bud onto the bore, you can see the streaks of copper that have been deposited there.

There is nothing the 30-06 does badly, it shoots heavy projectiles,200 grains plus, very well. She is an old case design but gets the job done. Good luck with your hunting as soon as you finish running that barrel in.

I'm not familiar with that one. For merely removing powder, it may just be using Kerosene.

To remove Copper, it depends how much Ammonia it has in it.
I bought one bottle of Sweets 7.62 and that will last me my lifetime and I don't often have to use it.
For general cleaning, I use Hoppe's Bore Cleaner, which also has some Ammonia I believe, but a much lower percentage than Sweets.

Yep. That'll do you.
Just make sure before you come to Vic to hunt Deer, you have your Game Licence.
If you need the contact details for GMA Vic, just ask. You pay for the year (or three) and the expiry is the same date for everyone, 31 Dec of that year.

Is it 22 or 24 inch barrel on the 30-06?

The one I handled in store to gauge the feel of it was a Magnum caliber. The barrel on the one I held was either 24 or 26, I can't quite remember and the rifle was very comfortable, albeit without scope.

Its a 22 inch barrel on the 30-06

The WSM's come with a 24 inch

And the Full length Mag's come with a 26 inch

In 30-06 with the 22 inch barrel it is 3.12kg which is spot on what I wanted.
