no fun in 308 imho, only became prolific cos the yanks couldn't bare letting ALL of Europe choose a different standard military cartridge. but yeah when it comes to these short action fad guns I steer clear.

nope whole push for .308win was usa military... it was either 7mm or 8mm from memory being suggested by all others from what I read. just recently the US said they were going to switch to 6.8spc in lieu of the 556.

Did read about that new 6.8mm round - so not sure what they are settling on now...

6.5 creedmoor is fine for poking holes in paper or shooting dogs/goats at 200m, but f***ed if I would use one in this day and age with modern body armor and armored vehicles, I grew up in Exmouth and as such know some Yank servicemen and women, and their snipers are no longer fond of anything under a 300winmag or equivalent, even the secret service used to use a 7mm rem mag. the 308 fails to penetrate armor that a 270 can poke holes through and can only imagine that the 6.5 sporting even less energy would be even less effective. they have been on about moving onto the 6.8spc in their M4 platform and equivalents due to the same issue, armour. the 556 just doesn't have the knockdown power. also the reason blokes used to pickup the AK47's off the enemy instead of sticking with their m16's... im sure the 556 has served well and in most cases its fine, but yeah they have increasingly needed something with more oompf

There is some great info in these posts. Here in the UK most deer are shot at less than 200meters so I suppose I’m in the “less is best” magnification gang! My 2cents worth would say spend as much as you can on the scope, get the best glass you can afford and my experience is get a 30mm tube, I was surprised at how much extra light it transmits. As for the .22lr I was sold on the Lithgow 101 after watching Ozzie Reviews!! The engineering is just top class and it’s a bit of a tack driver. Happy and safe hunting.
