Ruger #3 what to rebarrel it to?

Post by andym79 » 20 Mar 2019, 8:12 pm

Hi, guys I have been flitting between ideas for this one and I mean a whole myriad of different thoughts!

Like anything from 218 bee, 220 swift, 257 Roberts, 277 Weatherby Magnum, 7x57R, 300 Win Mag, 33 Winchester, 358 Norm Mag, 375 H&H, 405 Winchester, 40-82 and more!

Mostly when I do a project I have a limitation, this size rim or that size head, or that maximum length!

The Ruger gives me non of those constraints so the options are vast.

I got the Ruger cheap in 45-70 but because Bubba had visited it and taken the barrel down to 16".

I could put a nice 45 -70 barrel on it, but I want to barrel it in 40 cal or less.

I am going to open this one to the floor, if you had a Ruger #3 sat there what would you make it into?

I was thinking 375 H&H as an option, but thought it might sting a bit, the 404 would bite! A beast like that would want to be loaded down.

For some reason i love the 405win ...... wish I knew why
maybe it is the fact that a US Prez once shot this cal on the lawns of the white house ...... or maybe it's the fact it will drop a sambar scrub bull and a buff . Hmmm it's old but effective and yep I would love one in a lever .

The president you’re referring to wouldn’t be Roosevelt would it ? Quite a character. Wish we still had leaders like him

I did think and still like the idea of one in 6mm BR, but is the Ruger 3# inherently a rifle accurate enough for such a thing?

Hard to argue against a 6mm BR. Use a 1:14 and shoot 60 to 70 grain or 1:8 and shoot 100 grain projectiles.

Oh I really want the cartridge, I am just not sure I can put I on a Ruger #3 (I mean I can), but is the Ruger #3 a platform that will get much out of the cartridge?

Or would I be better off rebarreling my Howa 1500 243 in to a 6mm BR?

Thanks

I'd flog it off, buy something already available

Unless it's the same rim ur up for additional cost for modification or replacement along with barrel and chamber costs.

And its still only a no3 not a 1

Go 7x57R, punches well above it's weight. Covers almost everything you are going to find here except probably Water Buffalo.

I have a Ruger #1 in 6 BR and it shoots in the 0.400. The Howa is potentially more accurate. It depends what your expectations are.

If it were sitting on my bench, I'd be looking at .338-06 A square or .35 Whelan. Big enough to be fun without belting the living shine out of your shoulder and just a little bit unusual.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

The 450/400 looks real special every time you bring it out and can be loaded so it doesnt sting if you are a bit recoil shy. When you are hunting with it, you find that you don't notice the kick.

You do a lot of these projects do you mind sharing what you currently have.I was interested in 338 Federal when my .243 barrel was rusty.I ended up painting it instead as it was going to be difficult to rebarrel and most advice I received from this site was buy a rifle in .338 Federal

I am seriously considering a 7x57r but bullet price is a problem.

For some reason 6.5 and 7 cost a lot more than 224 243 257 270 and 308 bullets.

I don't have a problem with normal cartridges though most of mine are non standard, most of mine get re done for better or heavier barrels. Too many factory barrels are either not good or are in a #1 or #2

Pretty common to get some ordinary barrels in Ruger #1s and I assume Ruger #3. Makes them so much better with an aftermarket one. My 450/400 has a Pac Nor.

When I do pick a cartridge it will ware a Krieger or Pacnor.

Krieger are better but pacnor offer so much more choice in twists!

Krieger will do any twist but its $100-$225 extra depending on how far out of normal. Can't justify one if you don't like there twist.

Get yourself that Kreiger 6 mm barrel and chamber it in 6 BR and you will love it.

Never shot a 450/400, but just looked it up and it does look good, eh? Very interesting.....

Before the 375 H&H, the 450/400 Jefferey was the quintessential African cartridge.
