1904 Portuguese Verguiro

Post by Mick280 » 24 Mar 2019, 10:21 am

Picked this little gem up at an antique arms fair a couple of weeks ago and am seeking some advice on which ammo is safe to put through it!!
The rifle is a 1939 8x57 conversion,Matching numbers, original and in very good condition!!
Found a box of Hornady Custom and plan on shooting them and using the brass!!
Can these be safely shot in this rifle??
Thanks
Mick

G'day Mick 280,
These rifles will accept any 8x57JS, commercial or military. American loaded 8mm is always loaded down in pressure due to the American habit of firing ammo in early J bore rifles like the Commission 88 etc. European ammo such as PPU is loaded to correct specification for military ammunition and shoots well in these rifles, enjoy!

Great rifle, very accurate and fun to shoot, I have two of them.
Any 8x57mm IS, or load your own.
You can also load gallery rounds using 00-buck shot :-)

Not tricky exactly, once you learn it it's pretty simple.
Youtube video is the best way.

There are others, just watch them all until you understand the mechanism.

The cam surface on the bolt is easily broken off, one of mine broke, and I've read of others with the same problem.
I don't know what causes them to break. Mine appeared to be a fresh break right through, no indication that it had been cracked for some time. It failed while I was shooting some subsonic cast ammunition so I doubt it's related to the ammo either. Worth inspecting it closely whenever you have the bolt out just in case a crack becomes apparent.
