Don't forget the Spear 100gn. Sierra even do an 85gn .308" bullet.
The main drawback to the '06 and it's brethren is the long action required to run it.

one of the most flattest shooting rounds I have is the 270wsm shooting 150gr projectiles at 3200fps
mild recoil in a long action so the projectiles can be loaded long for more powder space but less pressure
there are plenty of 270 projectiles around to choose from, I have found my barrel likes the 150 sst the best at the moment
I am going to try the matrix 165 gr projectiles when I have run out of the sst's

When I failed at 400 metres to be an F-class champion with my .222 I went looking for a flat long range cartridge and decided 7mm Rem Mag was the go and by pure chance the Electrical contractor at work had one and was selling due to divorce and it was the Remington Sendero that he had lovingly run in and bedded

Doesn't just about any 30 cal give you similar flexibility? As you go up in caliber you get these kind of choices. A 460 Weatherby Magnum can shoot 200 to 500 grain projectiles and can do everything a 30/06 can do only better including tenderising your shoulder.

I think the OP will shoot a 224 or a 20 more than he would a 30 cal.... Or a 458.

There has to be a point of diminishing returns - given limited chamber sizing and projectile weighs - look to military type firearms for efficient powder burns vs projectile weights...

It just is largely not true, not in Australia anyway it seems like one of those things that makes sense on the surface and everyone believes it but nobody bothers to check the prices.

Cheap stuff for all of them is $30-$35 mid range is $40-$50 and high end stuff is $60-90 for all of them pretty much

Yeap pretty much, I was shocked at how expensive 243 ammo was last year, seems like anything fastish was well north of $40.

Right now I can buy bulk Norma 270 Win 130gr SP for $28bx, 3140fps so its reasonably brisk too.

Living in country WA the Buffalo River .243 ammo is north of $50 for 20. Which is why I reload. It cost around $1 a shot to reload using 87 grain Vmax’s, ADI 2209 powder, and CCI primers. Having said that, in a big night of fox shooting I may shoot six rounds. So in reality, per trip, the ammo cost is way less than the fuel cost: Even if I used factory ammo. I do prefer reloading because on occasions I do go through a fair bit of ammo Over a weekend when roo shooting. That is when I get a return on investment. Plus I would rather be down in the workshop reloading, listening to a history podcast than watching some ABC drama with a bunch of middle aged, middle class women banging on about relationships and how miserable they all are all feckn night.

See I hear this argument a lot as well regarding the long action. And then after deciding on their medium length .308 so it’s lighter and runs faster, 7/10 people seem to then go buy a tikka or Howa with a full length 30-06 sized action.

I always find that entertaining.

I have both - long and short action rifles and I’d never make a purchase with any consideration To either action...makes zero difference to me.

Tend to agree with Tassie,,,,

projectile matters more than headstamps!!!!!!!!

Short, Medium, Long, Magnum............as long as the projectile goes where it should, is there anything more to it that that???

We tend to overanalyse the obvious .........but then again shooting is a sport and is allowed to be overanalysed ...like football, soccer, rugby and so on....

Well in the end I went with none of the above and instead bought the rest of the gear I need to start reloading

I have a ton of brass saved up in the cupboard and decided I have the calibers to cover most game and I can hopefully improve the accuracy on the rifles I have with reloading as well as saving money..... time will tell
