300 win mag

Post by Member-Deleted » 27 Apr 2019, 12:01 am

My son is looking at getting a 300 win mag we've looked at the sako and not impressed with the price hike for one and they're lacking in the old sako department stock is just that a stock they don't have the old sako feel anymore not worth the money they're asking for them anymore all but 2 of my guns are sako wouldn't part with them although the last one the 7mm mag was touch and go with the stock and the newer ones are worse they've gone up nearly $1000 in 2 yrs so looks like sako is out this time so what do you blokes thing I would like some feed back from people who shoot that caliber and what type of rifle they use also what do others think on what type of rifle for value will appreciate all info

G'day GDB,
Bit off topic. But if you go for a more common round such as 30-06 prices can drop a fair bit. With roughly 200fps increase seems to me there has to be a compelling reason to buy a 300 winchester mag. IMO.

What about Wetherby?

I looked at the Tikka in 300 Win Mag but the magizene will not allow you to seat the bullets out very far. I am guessing that the Sako is the same. I use a Weatherby Mk5 action and shoot 180 grain Noslers. With a Kreiger barrel it shots very well.

You could look at a Wincherster but factory barrels can be very rough. If you got one secondhand and put an aftermarket barrel on it you would have a good thing.

Would he consider a 300 Waetherby Magnum or a 300 WSM?

Another consideration could be 300 RUM

Yes the Ultra Magnum is one arse kicking case but very hard to find as a factory chambering. You are more likely to find a 300/378 Weatherby Magnum which is my personal favourite.

It's easy to forget that other brands exist when your a one eyed Remington 700 fan

I've never bothered looking for other brands chambered in .300 RUM ... your right, it's a pretty limited cartridge.

the howa 300wm is cheap and has a generous mag length, 3.5"
love the 300wm :drinks:

Thanks guys i'll put it to him he's looked at the Remington and thinks he'd have to spend too much to get it up to scratch or somewhere where he'd like it I don't think he realised Howa made a 300 mag so i'll let him know I think at the end of the day it'll be reliability he'll be after not looks and no ultra mags thanks again people

Marksman Do you own a 300 or have you owned one i'd like to know myself how they compare to say 7mm , 30-06 we can look at figures all day but the actual use or knowledge of one is best

yes I have owned a few 300wm's
the 7mm will get there quicker and straighter but the 300 has way more punch for the longer distance
I believe the 7mm rem mag is a very good choice as well
I started to use the 30-06 on meat animals because the 300wm causes a lot of meat damage from kinetic shock, be bad medicine for scrub bulls

Hard to recommend the Remington however they do make a Sendero or 5R which appear to have a much better barrel. I think Duncan on these forums has one and may comment. Trigger would need replacing.

For the price the Howas might be a good thing as Marksman said. The price is certainly attractive and there is nothing wrong with the action or trigger.

If you have a RUM or the 378 Weatherby case you have something special, you won't see one around every corner. Makes things a little more expensive. A bit like driving a W427 and some bloke rocks up in his LS3 powered Clubby.

Used Guns have a beautiful MK5 in 270 Weatherby Magnum for sale in Tasmania for $1,500 and a 7mm Weatherby in SA for $1,800. Safari in Sydney have a 300 Waetherby Magnum going for $1,995. Not at the Howa price point but a rifle to treasure for a life time.

My experiences with the Sako and the 300WM were in the Sako A7 model. Very unpleasant experience. Being a very light rifle, recoil was very unpleasant. Added to that the sako extraction issue was still prevalent back then even in the A7.

My choice for a 300WM - something with a bit of weight to absorb the recoil......you cant defeat physics!!
The howa barrelled action in 300 WM mated up to whatever stock tickles your fancy...........

was just looking at the breaks to fit Stix

MDT
ELITE MUZZLE BRAKE

The new MDT Elite Muzzle Brake has 35 degree angled baffles for increased recoil reduction while keeping a more streamlined design. By reducing recoil by up to 66% the follow-shot speed and accuracy is greatly improved while a straight cut through the rear baffle reduces concussive forces. MDT Muzzle Brakes are constructed out of steel 1018 steel and are provided with an overlapping lock nut for threaded barrels.

AVAILABLE IN
103636-BLK 223CAL 1/2X28 NEW $134.90
103516-BLK 30CAL 5/8X24 NEW $134.90

Recoil reduction of 60% - is that real? I’ve got little to no experience with brakes...I have one on my 260 but that still recoils like a 308...
