New offering from Remington

Post by on_one_wheel » 25 May 2019, 8:57 am

Once in a while I take a look at the Remington website to dream about rifles that I don't need.

This morning to my surprise a new offering popped up and I'm as excited as a fat kid in a candy store.

Seeing how the 6.5 creed has proven to be much more than a fad and the range of projectiles available for it has greatly expanded I'm keen to get my man bun on, twist the ends of my mostash and go full hipster.

My initial thoughts are...
The 20" barrel seems a little on the short side and may give up a little velocity.
I'd prefer a one piece scope rail (easy fix)

What ya recon?

Sounds like they are spending a bit more time on improving the barrel finish and quality. Hopefully that will make it shoot more like a Sendero. I will be interested to see what you think if you get one.

Do you think that the short 20" barrel would be giving up much of the 6.5 velocity magic?

Compared to a 26 inch barrel would you be giving up 150 fps with heavier 140 grain pills? Might make a difference beyond 500 in terminal performance but for normal hunting distances I don't think you would miss it too much. What would you use it for mainly? Target or hunting?

Roughly $2585

That's about $600 more than I was expecting, perhaps the alloy beded stock and attention to detail would account for that?

That doesn't sound like too much of a compromise.
50:50 target / hunting
I'd never hunt past 500m

Happy birthday Duncan, perhaps you should treat yourself to a new Remington?

I think there are a few advantages in having a shorter barrel when hunting and under 500 metre hits won't tell the difference.

They also use 20 or so inch barrels for short range target shooting, ideal for barrel stiffness and harmonics.

My tikka started life as a 24” heavy barrel and is now just shy of 21” and previous owners chrono showed it lost sfa in velocity from docking - it was docked half inch, re crowned, retested 5 times to optimise a 140gn projectile...shoots very nicely.
