Mauser M18 6.5x55 Swedish

Post by Bill » 07 Jul 2019, 4:40 pm

Thought I'd throw up a couple of pics of my Mauser M18 in 6.5x55SE. Ive had 4 swede's previously but they were M96 or M38's and id always fancied a modern rifle so I could fully take advantage of the 6.5x55 Scan 58k loads.

Scope and a set of rings were removed off a spare Howa mini 6.5 Grendel and they slotted straight onto the M18. First impressions are good and I like the rubber inlay stock more than my T3x tupperware. Early days but I like the trigger alot, stock dynamics are very friendly and I had zero issues with mag loading, feeding or extraction.

these were just some lightish run in loads, however I can see a sweet spot around 48grs......

Nice one Bill. I fancied one of those M18 too. Looks and sounds if it’s going to be a good performer. Yep 48gn looks about right.

thanks fella's, 155gr Lapua mega's in Lap brass, should be doing around 2700fps. Still a bit of space left in the case so I should be able to bump speeds a bit more.....

hey bill, if you haven't tried already, give reloader 22 powder a go . i get really good accuracy out of my 6.5x55 with 140 sst's at around 46.7 grain @ 2810fps and nosler 120 BT's 49 grain for 2950fps. the 6.5 swede in a modern action is a really good thing . enjoy !

thanks bigrich, I have plenty of RE26 on hand and the 140gr and 155gr seem to respond to 26 quite well, RE22 would probably give similar speed no doubt.....

I polished the bolt body today for a bit more bling and it maybe minor but it seems a little smoother, certainly looks better I reckon.

loaded up 17 rounds into some old Lapua brass today. Using some quick load data, 50gr of reloader 22 and then upto 51gr, 3 shot groups.

Bigrich the RE22 powder did the trick, lots of 3 shot groups cloverleafing at 50m, 50gr which was a sighting group had 2 bullets go thru the same hole, 50.6 and 50.9 had cloverleafs and 51gr had primers starting to flatten. Speed should be around 2730fps which for a heavy 155gr Mega is heaps of penetration for the Swede. :drinks:

I'll take it out to 100 and 200m this month at Majura for final testing.

Yeah you guys in WA really get beat up by licensing flutch, even thou I've got a 270 and RE26 launches 150grs at 3100fps, I've shot most of my game over the years with the Swede is the she's the gal Id rather dance with.

Nice rifle/groups, I've just purchased a CZ 557 with full stock in 6.5x55SE and was wondering what the difference was with SCAN loads other than the higher pressure.
I also have shot a 270Win for the past 22 years and have to ask what 270 cartridge you are getting 3100fps for 150 grainers? I am guessing not a 270w.

Cheers

Gday John, yeah just higher pressure loads to take advantage of the strong action, using Lapua brass.

yeah 1960's Husqvarna 270 winchester, 26 inch tube, 3098 fps with the 150gr NBT's

pretty good tassietiger, infact its close to my favorite trigger, but not quite as good as my Cadet thou, which is crisper than snapping icicles :drinks:

I got myself a “modern “ synthetic stocked rifle recently that’s a cousin to your Mauser bill, it’s a Sauer 100 xt, in 223. I believe they pretty well much use the same receiver, bolts, barrels and triggers, as Mauser, Sauer and Blaser are all part of the same corporation. It’s a very slick gun as I’m sure your Mauser is bill

I almost bought a 223 S100 that magnum sport had for only $699, instead bought a Ruger 17 WSM, which has since been upgrade for its prettier sister in 17 Hornet :drinks:

Glad you’re happy with it mate. I did post somewhere before that I was considering one in 300WINMag. Went with a Winchester Mod 70 instead.

so Ive been collecting M/41 139gr Swede ammo recently and finally thought Id throw a few down the Mauser M18s throat see what happens....the gun seemed to like em

Was a quick 50m lunch time session at St Mary, 2nd group went 13mm for 5 shots, kinda wished Id taken another box with me.

The Prickskytte 139gr Boat tails are what was developed for the M/41 sniper rifles and mostly what was imported into OZ :drinks:

How on earth were you able to find M41 ammo? my old swede seems to like the 140gn S&B the most at least from what I can tell using irons.

Howdy folks,
I'm on a 6.5SE journey myself
Like most I have purchased A modern action Zastava M70 stainlessafter having a M96 , Being A 1/220 twist I have decided on the 100gr projectiles, mainly the 100 EDL-M for light animals and 103gr outer edge for deer I would like to give the barns 100gr TTSX a go as well .
I started with the ADI2206H which proved to be a little erratic at higher velocities . yet showed good potential at lower velocities 2800-3000 fps
ADI 2208 was erratic at lower charge waits yet once the case started filling up is proving reliable . After finding a good speed node I am at the point of playing with seating depth.
