Finally.....

Post by bigpete » 04 Aug 2019, 6:33 am

Finally getting what I consider a bona fide big bore.
Went into the LGS yesterday to trade for a 35 whelen mauser 98 with ammo and reloading dies, ended up buying a winchester model 70 in 458wm with ammo, dies, and a scope, for what I'd consider a ridiculously cheap price....now to find some load data using my 570gn cast gas check bullets....

Fantastic looking Winnie Pete. Congrats on the new addition to your firearms family. I like the sounds of the Mauser 98 in 35 Whelen too . I’ve decided to keep my Winchester 70 in 243 instead of converting to 358 . I’m just gunna get a mate to punch me in the shoulder after I pull the trigger  in place of that project I have a 1903 m98 8x57 “carbine “ coming . I’ve seen a few heavy hitting model 70’s for sale of late at good prices. Hope ya get a lot of enjoyment out of yours

pretty cool Pete

I would be measuring your mag to see if you can rechamber to lott, you need 3.6"
the winchester rifles have a very good mag length and you would still be able to shoot the 458wm in the same rifle
I'm the type that just cannot leave things alone though
really nice rifle :drinks:

I'll load what I bloody well want thanks. I don't think 570gn at over 1900fps is going to be anything like shooting a shotgun slug either....plus I make the damn things myself....

I'll play devils advocate and say keep it in 458win if you like 458win, especially if you want to run cast loads anyway. I like the Lott but don't understand why everything needs be a Lott these days. The 458win runs as hard as the old nitro expresses full tilt, thats plenty of fun for clearing elephant escaped from the zoo.

Side tangent- just read the 458 lott article on wikipedia and its fanboyed to hell. Again not knocking the Lott, its one of my favourites. But it reads like its been written by a kid, second language English, making a case for the subject instead of producing facts objectively.

Line after line of it ' What the .458 Lott lacks in velocity and energy compared to the .450 Rigby or the .460 Weatherby Magnum, it more than makes up for by virtue of its versatility" Opinion, wordy and superflous to the article. They used to edit that stuff out as soon as it appeared.

Duncan you may be underestimating the potential of the 458Winmag a bit....scratch that.....a lot. Factory ammo is a 510gr at 2150fps.....Suggesting a .69cal 454gr slug at 1450fps (ish) and .458cal 570gr at likely 1750 fps plus are ‘the same’......(?) I’m no mathematician....but that is a stonking great difference.
Congrats on the new piece Pete! That thing is ALL gun! Almost Enoughgun!!
Cheers,
Tank.

Mate....my tinnitus is off the Richter scale just thinking about firing a 458 without ears on....with or without a brake!
1800fps as a starter......shoot! What powder you using in that behemoth?
20gr of Trailboss behind your 570 would be a fun plinker.....but who buys a 458 for plinking?
What year is your 70 from? It is a fine looking piece.

Not sure what year,but it's a push feed so post 64 I'd say .
Problem is,I don't hunt with ear muffs on,it's fine while practicing but for hunting they're a pain.
I'm using ar2206h and can allegedly achieve 1960fps as a top load....but yeah, pretty much like shooting a shotgun slug according to some...not
