New Rifle?

Post by James G » 17 Feb 2014, 5:04 pm

Hello,

I'm thinking of getting a new rifle... I'm thinking of maybe a Ruger Scout in 308... but I already have a 223 and a 243, should I go bigger?

If so, what rifle and calibre?

Cheers

.308 is a significant step up from .243 in terms of power. Really you're not going to "need" anything more powerful.

That said, what are you shooting/hunting? What distances?

.308 could take anything you're hunting in SA regardless, but if you got us a bit more info we can give some decent suggestions instead of just throwing out random calibres.

Oh on the subject of the Scout too, IMO the Hawkeye is a better rifle than the scout.

Unless you really need the short barrel for dense scrub and are going to go with a long eye relief scout style scope there is no point in getting one IMO.

I've shot a mates regularly and it's heavier, and not as accurate as Ruger's Hawkeye rifles. I'd take my Hawkeye .308 over his Scout any day.

With both of us hand loading we've also found the Scout to be less accurate.

Food for thought.

What are you going to do with the new rifle James?

Given your choice of the Ruger Gunsight Scout I can probably guess it's for hunting and if you need a fast handling gun with a 10 round mag the Ruger is probably a good choice.

From what I've heard (I know two people who bought them) don't expect great accuracy out of them but that doesn't mean they won't collect dozens of pigs on a weekends hunt.

At the end of the day you should buy whatever rifle you like, maybe two then another it's you're choice

.223, 243 and .308 is about the perfect spread for Australia I reckon.

Varmints, small game, large game rifles respectively.

.308 is definitely powerful enough for goats and pigs.

Some people might argue about pigs tough hide and bones, but a 180 grainer from a .308 will put them down all day long with authority.

Overkill for goats even. Need to be shooting King Billy for a 180gr to not put him down :D

Not knocking the .308 of course. It will definitely do the job for you.
