Not just as an 'normal' item I'm pretty sure.

Still need to do the customs application form stuff.

From the Australian customs website for you:

The importation of ammunition (including components) and magazines is controlled under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 (the Regulations). Importers must obtain permission to bring ammunition and magazines into Australia.

MAGAZINES
To import magazines into Australia, importers must first obtain written certification from the police firearms or weapons registry in their State or Territory, or written permission to import from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department prior to importation.

A firearm magazine means a magazine designed or intended for use with a firearm, whether or not complete, damaged, temporarily or permanently inoperable, or unfinished.

Police Certification
To import certain firearm magazines into Australia, the police certification will be in the form of a B709A Importation of Firearms – Police Confirmation and Certification Form (B709A Form).

To import handgun magazines into Australia, the police certification will be in the form of a B709D Importation of Firearms – Police Confirmation and Certification Form (B709D Form).

Handgun magazines imported by sports shooters are limited to a maximum capacity of 10 rounds. See the Importing Handguns fact sheet for further information on this restriction.

I'm pretty sure that's the answer for just about everything in any way, shape or form associated with shooting.

You can't even import empty brass as far as I know

Pretty much.

It doesn't have to be an assembled rifle to be restricted.

Brass, bullets, barrels, magazines, etc. all bits which by themselves are much of anything.

All restricted :(

The real question for me is... Is it worth it?

I've been toying with the idea for a while now. I can buy a 10 round mag from US for $30, where as it costs me $120 here. If I add the postage $40, it means I can get 2 for the price of one based on Aussie costs!

So I'm wondering if people have done it and what their experience was like?

From what I've read, there is no customs charge, but it needs to be delivered via a gun dealer? So maybe the gun dealer then loads a handling fee onto the cost and so maybe my idea of getting two for the price of 1 goes out the window?

If anyone has any experiences, I'd love to hear what they are?

Cheers n thx.

I doubt any dealer will do it out of the kindness of their heart for you. I'd expect a fee for their time.

Don't really know a $ figure, but assuming they charge you for an hour of their time, you'll be at or above Australian retail price for a magazine I would think.
See you on the firing line.

Because God forbid you import something which you can walk into any store in the country and buy without a license.

-1 for you Australian customs.

yeah thought that may be the case (dealer costs). its a shame the part has to go through a dealer. if it didn't have to go through a dealer i would be sitting pretty on the cost/benefit front!

RE: dealer fees.

Someone was talking about doing the same with rifles here a while ago and got a few prices from some dealer who specifically offers the whole import thing as a service.

I think it was $330 for them to bring a rifle in for you :?

LMAO at one of the rates in that other topic.

$1800 in freight from Canada + 25% import fees.

Forget that s**t!

What a joke, as if it takes anywhere near $1800 to ship something the size of a rifle overseas.

It's less than that to send a person ffs.

YES - you can buy a mag from overseas.

There is really no problem getting mags from overseas, well I have not had a problem anyway.
Firstly the seller needs to be willing to send it.
Most of the time it will arrive in your letter box.
If in the event of customs finding it they will give you 28 days to supply the B709 or forfeit the mag.
Brownells will post but want to see you B709 first.
This is from firsthand experience.

Guess I could give it a try, I have plenty of friends who would ship from the States, for me.

It's not about it being impossible, it's just whether you can be bothered jumping through the hoops for saving a few bucks on 1 magazine.

For the sake $50 on a single magazine, personally I'd rather just drive to my store and pick it up instead of spending the time/hassle with customs stuff.

Having a very hard time finding a magazine for a 40 plus year old gun. This is not about saving money, they are re manufactured mags and are very expensive from the States.

Ah, I see.

After petemacsydney's comments about the potential savings (or not) I just had money in my head. My bad.

In that case, if overseas is the only place can find it then yeah... Obviously that's your only option. You can import them but need to do the B709A customs permit.

Covered already but short answer = yes.
