I probably won’t be doing any testing as I’m never trying to hunt foxes or rabbits at any range I’m just pigging between 20 and 80 metres. I’m useing 87 v max for their suitability in the field and their reputation for accuracy at a sensible cost

Love my Lithgow, reccomend one to anyone. Have had a slight change of heart and am now leaning towards a 6.5 Grendel though!

Those results Emulate my sauer 30-06. I’m very impressed with the accuracy - equal to my / friends tikas/sakos. Very light rifle, smooth action, s**ty recoil pad, but very good factory stock...I’d buy another.

I bought a Howa 1500 .308 in stainless, 1/10 twist. It's in a Hogue Kryptek stock. Should be picking it up in a week or so when my licence is finalised (finally). Pretty smooth aciton and nice trigger (dry fired). Looking forward to getting out on the range soon!

I have a Sauer 101 in .308 and cannot recommend one enough. The Sauer 100 and Mauser 18 are close relatives and share many parts. I think you would be happy with any of them.

Under 1000,
Ruger American stainless steel 308 is the best about $900

Under 2000,
Browning x bolt Stalker stainless steel 308 is great about $1600

Howa is a bit heavy for scouting and bolt is not that smooth.

I bought a weatherby vanguard. 308 short action with polymer stock for 870.00 new, factory 2.5 inch groupings at 100 yards is pretty good for a hunting rifle.Since the purchase 6 months ago I have accurised the rifle further by buying a laminated stock that has alloy bedding from the factory, got the trigger lightened from factory set 4lb down to 2.5 lb,and the stock is floated from the barrel. This has turned a hunting rifle into a precise long distance rifle,I'm now getting 2.5 inch groupings at 200 yards and beyond.I have a luepold 40 x50 long range scope on it,and also installed a lucky 13 ten round magazine conversion kit. Last but not least I'm getting a muzzle brake threaded and installed on it to further enhance the rifle accuracy. I'm in to the rifle now for aproxametley 1600.00 but it is as accurate as a 3000.00 plus rifle.

Mick - plenty of good buys under the $1000 mark.....take your pick - i have shot and used then all - Win XPR, Ruger American, Howa, Mauser M18, Franchi Horizon .........all very serviceable models indeed.

My personal preference is the Howa M1500.......but thats just my pick.

Yep I would go a howa,or a vanguard-there's bugger all difference between the two. I'm using 120 grain rounds at our local rifle range and consistently getting 2.5in groupings at 200 yards. These guys at the range with their 3000 and 4000 buck rifles weren't doing any better than I was with my modified vanguard. But that's a hunting rifle only good for 100 yards? Bs,I can hit 500 yard targets with 4 inch groupings, ive only spent 1600.00 bucks on this vanguard and it preforms better than some 3000.00 rifles. Yeah it's heavy but im not walking through bush for k's chasing deer or pig like I used to. It is really up to the individual what type of rifle they get,all I'm saying is you don't have to spend 3 or 4 grand to get accurate and reliable rifles, ive proven this with my modified vanguard and the guys at the range were amazed to see me hitting targets at 500 yards with dinner plate size groupings. 150 grain rounds for 500 yard targets, 120 grain rounds for 200 yard targets. Whateva you get I'm sure you will be happy.Cheers.
