Any reason your not so keen on a howa?

No reason, I know a couple of blokes with them in 223 and they’re good rifles. Definitely one to consider especially with the different combinations and stock choices etc.

Haven’t had a plastic “trigger” fail, but plastic is plastic and I don’t feel that a trigger tang is a place to save some $. Just my opinion.

My H&R 410 does actually have a plastic trigger, but for a cheap fun gun it’s never worried me, plus I don’t shoot it all that much, but when I do I guess it feels ok and it still goes bang.

The Howa's are a very good cheap gun real value for money I have a couple. I did swap the trigger springs out so I could adjust the weight to my liking. Really accurate guns for the price point, in fact I think you would have to go to Sako level to better the accuracy consistently or a custom top range barrel. I am going to modify the trigger a little further though a very personal thing but I think it is a little wide in the blade just doesn't fit the finger exactly.

Another Sauer vote, great gun I also own a Howa or 2 great value, great shooting gun, but for me the Sauer is better,
Tikkas aren’t bad but if wanting to spend bigger money would just spend more on the higher Sauer range

So you just have a vibe then TT ??

I've sold products in the surgical industry for over 24 years and some of the ' plastic's ' I sell need to be autoclavable (134 C, 5000 plus cycles) and exhibit self lubricating properties. In fact I have a bar of Acetal (Delrin) that if you strike with a ball peen hammer it wont mark at all, do the same with a piece of stainless, mild steel or titanium and it will leave a permanent dent.

Will a Sauer shoot better than a Tikka? My Tikka in 223 has shot a best group of 0.181 and can shoot aggs in the mid .2s. If you want things like a steel mag and top feeding you can upgrade to a Sako. My vote is to build something using a Defiance Deviant action. Build it to what you wanted and you won't have to modify your factory rifle.

sub $1k budget SCJ429, I'd go Howa followed by a Mauser M18, no brainer for me, both offer exceptional accuracy for value

Looking at the Sauer it is designed a lot like the Tikka or a Sako A7. Floating recoil lug, 3 lug bolt face which resembles the Sako, hammer forged barrel. It would be interesting to see how someone gets on with one.

When I pick up my sauer 100 it just feels real nice and there is a level of comfort and confidence knowing it’s going to put the projectile exactly where you are aiming

My sauer is 243. I got sub moa with first lot of factory stuff, I never bothered to go any further with different factory ammo types. , then I loaded up a heap with different seating depths to get more accuracy but I now never have the time to test that ammo so it sits around untested while I work or hunt

I probably won’t be doing any testing as I’m never trying to hunt foxes or rabbits at any range I’m just pigging between 20 and 80 metres. I’m useing 87 v max for their suitability in the field and their reputation for accuracy at a sensible cost

Those results Emulate my sauer 30-06. I’m very impressed with the accuracy - equal to my / friends tikas/sakos. Very light rifle, smooth action, s**ty recoil pad, but very good factory stock...I’d buy another.

I bought a Howa 1500 .308 in stainless, 1/10 twist. It's in a Hogue Kryptek stock. Should be picking it up in a week or so when my licence is finalised (finally). Pretty smooth aciton and nice trigger (dry fired). Looking forward to getting out on the range soon!

I have a Sauer 101 in .308 and cannot recommend one enough. The Sauer 100 and Mauser 18 are close relatives and share many parts. I think you would be happy with any of them.

Under 1000,
Ruger American stainless steel 308 is the best about $900

Under 2000,
Browning x bolt Stalker stainless steel 308 is great about $1600

Howa is a bit heavy for scouting and bolt is not that smooth.

I bought a weatherby vanguard. 308 short action with polymer stock for 870.00 new, factory 2.5 inch groupings at 100 yards is pretty good for a hunting rifle.Since the purchase 6 months ago I have accurised the rifle further by buying a laminated stock that has alloy bedding from the factory, got the trigger lightened from factory set 4lb down to 2.5 lb,and the stock is floated from the barrel. This has turned a hunting rifle into a precise long distance rifle,I'm now getting 2.5 inch groupings at 200 yards and beyond.I have a luepold 40 x50 long range scope on it,and also installed a lucky 13 ten round magazine conversion kit. Last but not least I'm getting a muzzle brake threaded and installed on it to further enhance the rifle accuracy. I'm in to the rifle now for aproxametley 1600.00 but it is as accurate as a 3000.00 plus rifle.
