What are they worth? .17 & 22250

Post by Timboon » 29 Sep 2019, 9:59 am

Hi there fellas,

Firstly this is my first post on your forum so thanks for having me.

I've got a Rem mod 700 .17 & a Sako 250 Forrester, both i have never really shot. I estimate they could be around 1990/1995 models ( perhaps older i really dont know ). Being of the high velocity that they both are i'm not interested in rifles that dont shoot good groups. Both i picked up cheap off Uncles many moons ago, both had 8 x 56 Khales on them.

I'm chasing a rough price,

The Rem 17 has a good condition stock, needs re-bluing.
The Sako 22250 Forrester is in good condition without being immaculate.

I've had the scopes serviced by Herman ( Adelaide guru ) about ten years ago and have been stored even since - Also interested in an approx price for both of these. They are also in good condition.

I also have a Winchester mod 70 .308, shoots well, Pecar 4x10x50 on it, Ruger stainless barrel.

I'm curious to know where i'll be financially selling the 3 rifles, and the two khales.

I want to look at a 6.5 Creedmoor and potentially a .223.

Sorry my first post is a little long winded and quite a bit of info.

Cheers Tim

Had a quick squiz - there is a sako forrestir In exc condition being advertised for $1800 with a bushy 3-9 scope and the rem 700 fireball .17 with similar scope and condition is looking at a grand - as ball parks.
No idea on the scopes - if someone is really chasing that brand / model, you might get some $$$ but unlike rifles, where age is not exactly reflective of accuracy or price (some cases the opposite holds true - older the better) - scopes have moved on a long way...

I’d say a grand would pull the Remington up. The sako would top out at 1500 if in top condition. The 8x56 kahles are extremely desirable scopes and easily equal to today’s scopes, I’d say 600 -800 on the scopes if they are in excellent shape.

The description you have and you have to be honest but a Remington 700 which has a barrel that needs re blueing is not going to get very much. The outside condition of the barrel says a lot of what could be expected of the condition on the inside of the barrel. So you have a Stock and an action with money probably needing to be spent on a new barrel. I am a pessimist but that is how I would asses the gun if I was considering buying it so I would be thinking $500-$800

The Sako is going to get a bit more because its a Sako condition of the stock would be a major factor being a 22-250 is good and bad its a desirable caliber for a lot of people but they do have short barrel life so a question mark will always be in the buyers mind and will sway price.

Thanks fellas.

I haven't shot them both enough to know barrel condition but I expect they'd both need a replacement.
The 17 is a good stock on a 700 action only really I understand that.
The Sako is a nice rifle with medium barrel.
I guess there is an option to bore both out to another calibre.
Not something I'm an expert on and may cost equivalent of a new barrel anyway.

Sell the scopes seperately advertise for 4-500, depending upon the exterior.

I would have said in a buyers market the Rem 17 would be worth 700-850 no more. only an old timers gun.

The older Sako's again really only appeal to older buyers, we are in a recession and drought so $1200 would be a fair price, you may need to go to $1000 to move it.

Cheers Bill,

I was thinking if i got $400 for the Rem and $1200 for the Sako I'd be pretty happy.

Hopefully a $1000 for the 2 x Khales and i'm starting to look ok for a new Rifle

the other issue you have to deal with Tim is WA and freight, 90% of the buyers are in the Eastern side and that adds in expensive freight.

I guess you dont know what condition of the barrel is like on the 17 so it be comes a stock n action so $4-500 is where its at. Sako's can be funny and be prepared to take heaps of close up pics for the old blokes to look at prior to any ph calls. Good luck what make of rifle you thinking of ?

Sakos don’t just appeal to old blokes. Some young guys appreciate the true style, heart and soul that only a gun like this can contain.
If a rifle is younger than 30 it has no style. Then again what classifies you as an old guy.?

that may be the case deano, but go to a range and a sure bet you see loads of shiny Tikka's and Howa's and very few old Sako's. Try getting a new extractor for an old L579, yeap no longer in stock and it will be need to be smithed and installed. Want an aftermarket Carbon fibre, composite stock or 10 shot magazine for an old Sako, yeah will cost a fortune and need to be import..... you get where I'm going.

Gday Bill,

In regard to what Rifle i'm thinking of at this stage i'm undecided.

I have a few options moving fwd.

Ideally i'd like a good target/varmint rifle so that may end up being the Sako 250 i currently have with a new barrel and optics.

Then i would most likely move on my Winchester mod 70 .308, The Rem 17 and both the Khales and see where i'm at financially before deciding what breed 6.5 Creed i'd go for...

I grew up in the SE of SA, we used to shoot a lot, foxes rabbits ducks and deer mostly. I now live in the SW of WA and i'll be honest the rifle i use the most now is my Weihrauch hw97k 22 air rifle.

The 308 isn't the sort of rifle you enjoy going out and letting off 20+ rounds, its light in the barrel and lets you know about it on the shoulder.

I'd like to have a couple of rifles i can have full confidence in and then only have myself to blame trying to shoot great groups at decent distances without being silly...

No offence you fellas that shoot the long range stuff its just not my thing. I'd prefer to hit a 10c coin at 200 with 3 shots than a carton of beer at 500 if that makes sense...

I think it would be worth taking all three of the rifles to a dealer to get some idea of the value here in WA. They can put a bore scope through them to let you know if the barrels are serviceable or not. Selling them in WA will not be straightforward due to our licensing laws. Someone would really have to want the .17 or the 22/250. Given the cost and the stuff around to add Cat B’s here, I suspect buyers will be quite particular. Plus you will need to sell all of them with a serviceability certificate.

I would also strongly recommend getting advice from a good firearms dealer about the best way for adding your desired new rifle to your license. Remembering that you need to have both a valid reason and valid need to add a new rifle.
