Hi all, I inherited this rifle from my father-in-law, it was his uncles gun.

Would like to know more about it please. Anyone know a bit of the history?

If you post up a few pictures of it. And a close up of the markings that are on the steel where the butt attaches and near where the barrel is attached there are people on here that will be able to decode a lot of information and tell you more than you thought possible from that gun.

At the back of the gun on the butt there is a little opening where parts were stored inside here you should also find a piece of paper that will tell you the date and to whom the rifle was sold too.

From your heading you have a Boer War era rifle, probably too late for SA service but definitely WW1. The ER, which is probably under a Crown is the cypher of King Edward VII, standing for Edward Rex, the BS is probably a worn BSA for the maker, Birmingham Small Arms, the LE1 is the model number Lee Enfield Rifle No1. These were issued to Australian troops heading overseas to Gallipoli, but exchanged for the more modern SMLE whilst in Egypt,as sungazer said ,pics mate, loads of them! Cheers.

So nothing about its early history but I can tell you in about the 50s the barrel was changed to a Heavy barrel for Full Bore Target shooting. You have a set of target sights on the rear rather than the original.

G'day Siclic,
Your LE was modified to range rifle specs, shortened later Heavy Barrel by Lithgow, BSA "nose knocker" range sight added. Original lobbing sight on side of fore end removed but I see the rear lobbing sight arm is still there under the range sight, no collectible value but as a period range rifle, if the bore is still good, you could reasonably expect from $4 to $600 as is. If the bore is cactus and the range sight loose the whole rifle is about $200 or so. If it is still good, give it a thorough clean up and go shoot some long range, I'm actually taking my LE to Castlemaine this Saturday to shoot 300 Snap and 500 Deliberate, though mine is a bit shabby, Cheers.
