Cheapest “bulk” .223?

Post by targetshooter900 » 25 Oct 2019, 4:45 pm

Hey fellas, who’s got the cheapest bulk .223 around Sydney. Looking at buying around 500 rounds to try and save. Thanks in advance

I weighed up the options a while ago and bought 1000 rounds of hornady....

but ultimately comes down to what gun shop bought what at what price. at one point I could buy PPU for $12 a pack (cheap as for WA) while most bulk stuff came in around $16 per 20... also depends on ya gun really.. mines not very fussy... but some are.

Not in Sydney, but down in Western Vic. I normally shoot Hornady steel case 55 gr, they go well through my Lithgow. Buy them in packs of 50 for $36, or at $120 for 200, but have seen them for 50c a round at times.

Tried the Hornady steel case in the Sauer last week and the groups were terrible. Not much better in the mate’s Tikka. We find Buffalo best of the cheaper ammo.

If you can find the 600 round osa/buffalo river tin cans they are good value..... ADI were selling pack of 20 for$15 at the shot show.

But probably check a couple different types out to see which one shoots the best out of your gun... them get your local shop to order in a big box for you

Cheers fellas, some good tips there. I will try out a few more brands before pulling the trigger, but i was originally thinking hornady. It’s for a remington 7615, mine isn’t too fussy but i have heard some are

What sort of target shooter doesn't roll his own? It costs me under 50c each time I pull the trigger.

dont think he is target shooting too enthusiastically if he is using a remington pump, but I agree... however I pay the WA tax on my stuff so comes to a little more than that but definitely under 55c a pop

Another vote for the ADI 900 round can - best value out there and shoots well in nearly all the rifles I've owned and seen.

Whatever you do, don't buy the Winchester 300 round bulk pack: http://www.smiffysgunsnammo.com.au/shop ... b58sj9S_w4

I'm getting about one failed primer every 20-30 rounds. Can't even use the brass, as it's crimped (PIA to deprime). Worst ammo ever.

Hornady tap is good value if you can find a deal.
My lithgow and warwick throw junk ammo all over the place. I'll grab 223 matchkings whenever I can find them.

I've never found 223 worth reloading. The opportunity cost of my time can't compete with sub $1 rounds. Probably why I have thousands of empty 223 cases at home...

The 223 is the perfect reloader’s cartridge. You can recycle them for well under 40c/piece. Just NS, prime, charge and off you go. I can turn 40 fresh range brass around in about an hour... I don’t get the whole “223 is too cheap to reload” argument. Last I checked, half of factory price is well, half the cost... that adds up mighty quick if you’re shooting any volume.

Depends on the primary reason u reload. If purely for cost savings depends on a few things.

If your time starved.
Paid big bucks at work.
Cost of components
Can save or earn money in more efficient ways

That is literally my life in a nutshell OB - two kids under 4, 10 hours a day at work, 3 hours a day dealing with kids. And by my books, I get paid extremely well...

But I can still recycle my weekend’s brass in a couple of nights. I resize + prime in front of telly (keeps the missus happy) - then only at the press for the other 1/2 hour to charge.

Pretty sure one can afford 1 hour a week to knock out a weekend’s worth of ammo... just sayin. Just make the time.

Rant over :drinks:

The cheapest iv run in to is the Hornsby steel case ammo, rubbish groups. There's a Sydney shop selling 200 rounds of 60 grain tap for $150 which for me shoots well

Satisfaction for me is (given my application) knowing my handload can outshoot me, which is pretty easily achieved. I see it as a waste of time and money taking it any further... to each to their own though :drinks:

If you shoot professionally 4 nites a week and get to bed around 4-5am, spending a day prepping brass and reloading doesnt make any financial sense what so ever. I'm not a pro shooter but a few mates do it.

and 223 OSA ammo whilst accurate also only clocks in just over 3000fps :o

I certainly agree for the professional culler it makes sense to buy factory, but mainly because it'll be a tax right off. Plus, I don't see the culler crawling around in the grass chasing after spent OSA brass.

But (depending on cartrdige), detailed brass prep only needs to be done once in a while... most of the time it doesn't have to be a lengthy process.

Hi, it's been a while for this thread, but wondering of anyone has tapped into any good buys in Brisbane? The best I can get is Cleavers with Winchester FMG at $12 per box of 20. They do a hollow point at $16. I bought a 1000 PPU when they were very cheap but don't know how good they are, will only usually use them for plinking or blowing up rocks. Anyone onto any good bulk deals on half decent ammo?

Ha Ha,, show your ladies a few 404, 375, or 50 cal rounds compared to the 223 and see how high their caliber of “impressed” is then.
