SHV I’m trying to get a handle on how these savage no4s should group, approximately how were your 5 and 10 shot groups? Did you shoot much past 3?

SHV what ammo are you using there? Mine doesn't seem to like S&B at all. My 174gr SMK handloads on the other hand go sub-moa for the first 3 at 100m. Opens up more as the barrel heats, but it'll put the first ten into 3" at 100m (with iron sights), probably better scoped.

S&B at indoor range, PPU at farm, only shot 6 rounds in total. seems both not too bad, the mount I use on LB No.4 bought from RPGfirearms, seems hold zero no problem
No.4's sight is the best iron sight I've tried ever, I believe can shoot MOA not too hard

I reckon you might see an improvement with handloads, both those brands are not known for their accuracy in the LEs. I have a hunch this is largely due to the shorter seating depth. I know for a fact that the S&B stuff is a full 40 thou shorter than my handloads, and my handloads are already being jumped due to OAL limitations. I'm going to pull all my remaining S&B and reseat over some adi extruded powder (interestingly the factory S&B 303 ammo uses ball powder).

Also (allegedly) a flat base bullet in a two groove bore can sometimes yield better stabilization... allegedly ;)

With a good sight picture, yes you can shoot them surprisingly accurately - I was impressed to see (give or take) around a minute of angle for those opening cold-bore shots. Part of the problem is eye fatigue and sight picture - stare at green grass sometimes to freshen the eyes. Another part is stock stresses W.R.T. heat; particulary with the partially-bedded forend.

Also I ordered a spare front sight from the UK, then filed it to a bit of a point (still blessed with sharp eyes :P ). Then I use a 6-o’clock hold to get my elevation as consistent as I can.

I’m gonna bed my action in an attempt to make it more consistent over the longer matches - they get pretty hot, particularly for a longer 32 round+ match with rapids and snaps.
