1912 Commercial 98 JP Sauer and Sohn Stutzen

Post by 9.3x64 » 28 Dec 2019, 10:56 am

Well I have been very fortunate to acquire this beautiful old girl from a deceased estate, and I thought I would share for those that might be interested in old Mausers.
The condition of this rifle is incredible and the barrel appears as new with hardly any sign of use.
The stock work on this thing is very interesting, it has some unusual small details that I personally have not seen before, and the action is the smoothest 98 I have ever used. Balance in the hand is superb.

Anyway I hope someone enjoys the pics.
Cheers Allan

G'day 9.3x64,
As a collector of military small arms of the 19th & 20th Century Mausers are high on my interest list and although military, sporting rifles of that period are also an interest even if I don't have many. To see such a magnificent stalking rifle as that has made my day! Thanks and enjoy!

Thankyou No1Mk3, so many fine guns sit in collections and never get seen by many people. I guess that’s one of the big advantages of forums like this.

Thanks SCJ429, that bolt handle is turned down and slightly back. Handling is beautiful and the whole rifle is quite light. I have not weighed it yet though.

yeah mate 347gr Woodleighs, they were very accurate, but I find thats the norm with big bores

Beautiful Rifle 9.3x64.

Purely a collectors piece for you, or do you plan to give the old girl some "time in the sun"?

Thanks mate, yes they have had it for a while now, but I have had the same 9.3x64 for nearly 30 years. Would you believe I bought it from Browns plains firearms in the late eighties when I was a young fella.

isn't it funny how ya just bond to some firearms , and others that may be perfectly accurate and do everything perfectly are just "meh"
i had a A7 308 sako , boringly accurate . sold it . i now have a barstardised 1903 turk 8mil with peeps and a 20" barrel that i absolutely love

apparently Col Whelen wrote "only accurate rifles are interesting"

that's well and good , but i reckon sometimes unique ,interesting rifles are more fun to shoot and own than accurate ones :P

which explains why i gravitate towards old lever guns at times

Thanks Stix, yes the barrel appears very thin for a .424” bore. But I think one of the advantages of the 10.75x68 was it ability to produce moderate velocity at very low pressure.
36000 psi hence I suspect why the “16 TON” is stamped next to the caliber in one of the photos.

I am hoping to develop a load with the 347 grain RNSN Woodleigh at about 2200 FPS.
That should be more than enough for an open sighted rifle for medium and large game to moderate ranges.
