Howa 300wm In MDT CHASSIS

Post by TassieTiger » 20 Feb 2020, 8:51 pm

So, this started out as a want - no...a need to be able to send 180gn projectiles down range, around 3000fps and be as accurate as possible - without going full house target rifle... it resulted in a friendly competition between a friend and I - he who bled Tikka vs this howa 300. (Results In other thread).

Originally, I incorrectly believed an 06 would be able to send 180’s at 3000, but after purchasing an 06 hunter / researching more - I found out this was not realistic.

It was Marksman that suggested the 300 howa (Holly) and I cannot repay his assistance in getting load development / the rifle, to what you see below.
The original rifle came in a hogue stock, but after sharing some strange results from a hot day - it was found the stock was moving enough to be touching barrel when it became warm. It had to go.
Enter the MDT allow modular chassis.

The heavy barrel 300wm howa is not a light rifle in the hogue stock...approx 4.5kgs...well holly has now been eating a few donuts and is approaching 8kgs with the bushnell 4-32/50 scope / chassis kit. It’s not a carry rifle for me.

The mdt chassis, grip, Fore end, longer steel mag (allowing for more seating development), locking butt, all come separately and lock in very tightly together. It’s precision cnc work and easy to put together - even for a nimpty like me.

The brake is a ebay gun guy special, but the rifle doesn’t really need it, the weight keeping recoil manageable. The complete chassis kit wasn’t cheap - some $1300...for what amounts to...a rifle that is predominantly for fun or perhaps one day - sit / stalk. The bushnell 4-32 offers a lot of range for the $$$ but, to be honest, swapping between this and a vx3, you can notice clarity differences.

The only thing that I may do in the future, is a trigger kit, as the two stage trigger on holly, is just...different to my other irons but there is nothing wrong with the existing as can be seen... this group was SST X 180’s from 68,0gns ar2209.

Friends love shooting this, as do I. The chassis makes the entire package and the rifle oozes confidence to the shooter. As per previous posts, this rifle was taking 5c pieces almost at will at 105m (nothing left of the 5’s as they are so thin) and the group below was shot from 200m (max easily achieved distance at my private setting).

That does look pretty sexy...a bit too sexy really...for a Tasmanian... 8-) ...& thats coming from someone who isnt much a fan of that kind of look... :)

Nice shooting too...

I think you should rock it right up & do a 2 tone black & chassis colour tone camo hand spray job on the chassis... :)

Ive just bought an MDT chassis for my howa .300
Cant wait for it to arrive and fit it up
I currently have a Boyds thumbhole laminate stock on it, but have the itch for chassis guns after buying the Lithgow Woomera

If I was building some kind of target/long range/spotlighting/pro shooting firearm, I reckon I would be doing just what you have done. Hard to beat for value and pretty good out of the box I reckon. Well done.

Just be aware mate, the chassis is only a very small part, of the kit - you also need fore end and front grip, the Forend cover (note - you may need different scope mounts with this part in place as my scope previous cleared by 3-4mm, but metal thickness and cut out wasn’t large enough for 50mm obj), you need to purchase butt separately and if you buy folding, you need a hinged spacer as well, a suitable grip seperately and the appropriate magazine.

I thought the alloy would fix in as manufacturer advised to not use loctite but I’m finding recoil is undoing many fixings.

Very nice mate, ESS is a good looking chassis, I've been having a look at one. I'll have to get one I think.
