Which five rifles should I own in Australia

Post by jeener » 05 Mar 2014, 1:35 pm

There are lots of YouTubes with Americans and Canadians doing their "5 rifles you should have" videos, but we don't have the same toys as them so it's mostly stuff we'll never see.

Just for fun, what are peoples picked for the 5 rifle you should have in Australia?

Maybe I'll get some inspiration for a new buy

this ^^^, if it's five cartridges my list would go like this

rimfire, .22LR has 1001 uses from target shooting, hunting and training new shooters

varminter .204R hard to think of a feral animal control round better for australia

medium game 7-08 i'm a fan of the 7mm's but a .308 or 30-06 would easily fit this spot on the list

target 6BR for target shooting out to 800m i think the 6BR is almost the perfect round, great ballistics and user friendly recoil

military .303 don't own one but i'd probably choose a SMLE as a rifle to own in this spot. I do own an Israeli K98k but it's not what the ANZAC's carried

Every patriotic Aussie must own at least one SMLE (303Brit)....
You need a Mauser for balance 8x57mm,
a 22LR bolt or lever or pumpie,
a 12g shottie
and a big boomer minimum 375H&H...

That will then start you off, there are serious gaps in that selection... you also NEED a 223Rem, a 308win, maybe a 35 cal of some kind, some pistol cal levers....of course you'll need an ultra class magnum.

1290: I have ONE 8x57 and fourteen various .303's and a couple of blackpowder versions and still think the mauser is the better rifle and the 8 x 57 is definately an underated cartridge.

My pick if I HAD to choose,

Aya 12 ga side by side
.22LR CZ or brno, small game and fun
.223 Howa for value and varminting
.308 Omark for target shooting OR a .303 SMLE for military origins
.300 winchester magnum Ruger Mark2 for everything left over

And I have one or two to choose from.......................

I reckon a .223 and a .308 will do every 'job' a shooter could want.

The other 3 rifles would just be whatever tickles your fancy for some fun ;)

Me too, but just to fill out the form I'd add a .22Brno Mod 2, .270win mod70, and for old times sake a 45/70 Sharps. (they are hell on camels) but it must have a hex barrel and open sights.

Anshultz .22 (everyone should own one once in their life)
Tikka 223 Varmit
Sako 6.5x55
Remington 300 Blackout ( closest thing to archery you'll ever find L0L)
12 Gauge Pump
I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible, but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Personally, for me; .22lr, .220 Swift, 25-06 Remington, .375 H&H, 12ga.
And maybe make a little extra safe room for a .303 Britsh in a number 5 Jungle Carbine. 5 guns isn't enough! :D
.22LR, .222 Remington, .12g. But it's not the same when they don't live in your safe :P

I think you only need 3,
.22 Magnum or Long Rifle
12 Gauge 3" Shotgun
Large centre fire
I have a Ruger American Compact .22 Magnum, Akkar Triple 12 gauge and Savage Bear Hunter in .338 WM.
This covers every contingency.

22 is a definite.
22/250 for the varmints.
270 for everything else.
308 for the range
and a 12 gauge for all things flying, running or standing still on an off day. Also for a great day with mates on clays.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I think I may be missing some.

1 - .22LR - bruno No2, custom No1 & winnie 1930 pumper, lost count, etc.
2 - .223 rounds - 218B, 223rem
3 - 6.5 - aharrrr, here you may have me, only got 7 & they all work as intended "very accurate"
4 - .303British - only two so far, had more but moved um on when I found the NRA style modifications.
Misc: 410 full choke - stu*fs foxs at 40m - sh*t everywhere.

Need:
5 - 12G SxS :D
6 - I've been told I need one of those funny 30 cal. thingys, wot don't shoot reliably compared to the 6.5's from Sweeden. But only if forced to have it!
The Sweed is better! :P
