Personally, for me; .22lr, .220 Swift, 25-06 Remington, .375 H&H, 12ga.
And maybe make a little extra safe room for a .303 Britsh in a number 5 Jungle Carbine. 5 guns isn't enough! :D
.22LR, .222 Remington, .12g. But it's not the same when they don't live in your safe :P

I think you only need 3,
.22 Magnum or Long Rifle
12 Gauge 3" Shotgun
Large centre fire
I have a Ruger American Compact .22 Magnum, Akkar Triple 12 gauge and Savage Bear Hunter in .338 WM.
This covers every contingency.

22lr everyone should own at least one
223 for reaching out and touching
308 for everything
12g ducks,snakes ect
30/30 lever actions are just good fun

but you really need more than five,, ;)

22 is a definite.
22/250 for the varmints.
270 for everything else.
308 for the range
and a 12 gauge for all things flying, running or standing still on an off day. Also for a great day with mates on clays.
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I think I may be missing some.

1 - .22LR - bruno No2, custom No1 & winnie 1930 pumper, lost count, etc.
2 - .223 rounds - 218B, 223rem
3 - 6.5 - aharrrr, here you may have me, only got 7 & they all work as intended "very accurate"
4 - .303British - only two so far, had more but moved um on when I found the NRA style modifications.
Misc: 410 full choke - stu*fs foxs at 40m - sh*t everywhere.

Need:
5 - 12G SxS :D
6 - I've been told I need one of those funny 30 cal. thingys, wot don't shoot reliably compared to the 6.5's from Sweeden. But only if forced to have it!
The Sweed is better! :P

I do think a good Air rifle is needed for those quiet shots.
22 Air rifle.
204 Ruger.
25.06.
7mm R/Mag or 30.06.
Black powder rifle. muzzle load or cartridge.

+ one gun. 12 g.

.22LR Because it is cheap and quiet
.223 For reaching out beyond the .22
.308 For deer and other larger stuff
12ga For hitting moving stuff
.303 Brit Because the SMLE is awesome

So far I have a .22LR :D
Also have access to a bolt action 12ga 8-)

Just wish us Average Joe's here could have suppressed .223.

A suppressed .223 be the perfect firearm for the family farm!

I'm a bit hesitant to get a centerfire due to noise, but it would be perfect to sit on the hill and take care of the foxes that are rampant at the moment.

Won't be as nice as a suppressed one I suppose, but a .223 isn't that loud and is perfectly comfortable with earmuffs on.

Not an Aussie, never been to your lovely country. But from my understanding of your gun laws, my suggestions would be:

1. 22LR bolt action rifle
2. 22LR lever action rifle (Browning's BL-22 is the next fastest thing to a semiauto)
3. 303 SMLE (I like my No4 mk1)
4. 223 Remington bolt action rifle
5. 308 Winchester sporter
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

1. SMLE in .303
2. SMLE in .308
3. SMLE in .22
4. SMLE jungle carbine .303
5. SMLE no4 mk1T .303 (or an l42a1 in 7.62 Nato)

This should just about do it for me.

.22lr Bolt Action - The foundation of any gun collection

.223- perfect entry level centrefire that's useful in so many ways

.308w- cheap(ish) to shoot, will take down any animal in Australia.

12g- quintessential scatter gun, everyone should have one.

45/70 lever, cause it's a man's gun and makes me chuckle just looking at the rounds. Everyone should have at least one lever gun, cause you know , they're cool.
