That's not an easy task to name five rifles for Australian conditions. There are a lot of variables. A new shooter can't handle the recoil of a .300win mag or .30-06,Wether male or female. What do you shoot at? Game targets or both no rifle is an alrounder. Where you live is another factor Tasmania has no buffalo, Western Australia has very few deer. Get the idea I'm looking at.
Everyone needs a 22lr budget rifles are good so are top end depends on your wallet. A .223rem mines a Weatherby, mid size game a .243win would be ok if you don't mind long actions a .25-06 is better. Medium to larger game, .270win or .308win is fine. For big game a .300win mag is no slouche, albeit expensive to feed. my choices are for economic reasons. 22lr, 223,243,308 and 300win mag. My rifle is a Howa 1100 22lr the others are all Weatherby Vangaurd s2 all are affordable and good but you have to have good glass and mounts. Weatherby Vangaurd s2 is between $11-1300 $7-800 for a decent scope $150 for mounts. The Howa was $1050 With a zerotech scope and mounts supplied. So you have to do the maths. plus $300 to add each to your license, in W.A. So $2500 ×4= 10k plus $1350 is $11350. That's budget buying Tripple that at least if you go top end. Sako, Anschutz etc. Don't buy s/h unless you can check it out and shoot it. You can get bitten hard. it my be an ok rifle but its past isn't known. Could have done anything, and wanted by authorities as the worst case. hope this helps. Why have old un serviceable rifles if you can only have five?

A .22lr and 12 guage.

With one of these actions all you have a good choice from .223 to .308 parent case to magnums by changing quick release barrel and bolt
https://terminusactions.com/product/zeus/

Since it's a 3 lug bolt should handle the 80,000 PSi from .277 Sig Fury.

here's what i reckon:

22WMR
22-250 rem (or Ackley Improved, i've been wanting one of those for ages)
30-06
7mm rem mag
12ga

calibre choice is quite a personal thing and everyone has a different set of ideal cartridges.

2 are a given. 22 rimfire and 12 gauge shotgun.
So the choice becomes 3
Ok 308 is also a given.
So the choice becomes 2.
So my 2 choices left are what the 308 can’t do respectfully.
So one of them will have to be 338 lapua magnum
So realistically I just feel like I only have one choice here.
And I forfeit that choice because the 338 really broke the bank here. I have bigger problems now than what gun I should buy. I sleep on a couch because my wife just divorced me. That money was earmarked for our second honeymoon in Bali. I can’t afford to fix my car.
My dog ran away. And I lost my job do to my alcoholism.
And all of this is op’s fault.

I don't think I've entered into this previously but I offer my apologies if I'm mistaken. First question is - why five rifles? I am a firm believer in a .22LR as a "must have". After that it depends on what you are shooting/hunting.
For me, that means a .223Rem for foxes etc. and a .270W for bigger critters. A 12G shotgun is a given though it's not a rifle so doesn't enter into this discussion. So you can add whatever two extra rifles you want if you can justify the use of them but I reckon my three would cover most bases in Aus.
If you opt for a .243 then you pretty much cover both my centrefire choices so that takes you back to two with three "wild card" choices..

I’ve been culling my herd recently, I just don’t want rifles that sit in the safe and don’t get used. It’s money just sitting around in my book. So at a minimum for my uses 223, 6.5x55 and 308 . I also have a early 700 rem in 222 as a backup for the 223, and my martini 303 sporter for competition at my local range. Anything else I own is for collecting interest I guess

I only have 3 a 22LR, 44 mag, 223rem. Im happy to plug anything with that combo, even scrubbers can get a 223 in the head or hardcast from the 44 worse case.

Well if I won the lottery I'd love an English double rifle in .375H&H or .416Rigby just for fun but I'd struggle to find anything other than cardboard to use it on where I live. More realistic would be a CZ Safari in a similar calibre.

aside from comps shooting paper , here's my two cents on medium/ big bores . i had a 9.3x62 sako grizzly . beautiful accurate rifle . took it north on a once in a lifetime guided hunt in the NT .with warm handloads it went great . after that trip north i found it was overkill on game in south east QLD/ northern NSW . would just pinhole through most game . the only projectile that worked on lighter stuff than buff, wild horses/donkeys was the "soft" 270 speer. so the 9.3 went down the road . most medium bores are the same , except for the 35"s . 358 win, 35 whelen . they have softer projectiles available designed for american deer . my 358win hit pigs like a sledgehammer .looking at what projectile prices are now i don't think i'll own another one . the most practicle caliber i own now is my handloaded 6.5x55 . shot placement is more important on large pigs , but this rifle hasn't let me down yet

22 LR Brno CZ . Rabbits , Plinking etc.
223 Rem Howa rifle . Spotlighting . Foxes , Roos
243 W Sako A2 to 75 Varmint weight rifle , Dogs , goats , smaller deer and other targets from rests and bi-pods.
308 W Sako A2 to 75 Stalking weight rifle . Most game you can find in the bush .
375 H&H magnum Model 70 Winchester Safari Express CRF or a CZ 550 Safari magnum .
What's the best rifle to shoot a pig ? The one you have in your hand when you see a pig .

There is no such thing as an allround gun. At minimum any person who has a quality .22 rimfire, mine is an old Anschutz..22 magnum. A .223rem, and a .308 win. has most Australian game covered. Then add a good 12g shotgun and you have a fairly good arsenal. These idiots that get on these discussions and say a "shotty" s**t me. They wouldn't have a clue how to shoot, let alone be responsible. I have 5 shotguns and 16 rifles. I've been shooting for 52 years and each has a purpose. People that suck pens, hug trees and wave flags have there heads up their arse. You don't go rabbiting with a 460 weatherby nor go buff shooting with a .22lr. A 12g is for fast moving targets, nothing more. A good "gun" will cost a lot of coin, but they're worth it. I'm tired of idiots in the bush, they have ruined it for everyone.

223 in a AR15
308 in an AR10
7.62x39 in an AK. F the 5.45
9x19mm in a sigP320
12guage in a benelli M4

Any scenario I can think of can be covered with those calibres.

Everybody needs a pistol, a few rifles and a shotgun.
