Finally found my load

Post by Baldrick314 » 05 Mar 2014, 3:48 pm

After nearly two months of load development for my Glock I've finally found the sweet spot

Image
This group was shot at 15 yards offhand. At the top is 3 grouped (although it took out a previously patched hole) and then two touching just below that. All within the X and 10 ring. The X is roughly an inch and a half on this target.

Needless to say I'm stoked with the results and makes the last 2 months worth it

 you should try metalic falling plate. You've just got to hit a generously sized steel plate at 25 yards, no scoring rings, a hit is a hit :)

How many loads did you go through to find it out of curiosity?

Wondering how the process compares to working up rifle loads.

I tried 3 different powder loads but the real finicky part is getting seating depth and crimp correct. Because the 9mm headspaces on the rim of the case you've got to have a bit of a lip where the projectile is seated but you still want some crimp on the round. Too much crimp = incorrect headspace which is never good.

Some of my first loads were seated too short so they would flick up on loading and jam the pistol every so often which is annoying and embarrassing in the middle of a match

I had a load that worked well but shot high and I couldn't adjust the sights any lower so I dropped .2 of a grain off my load and instantly it wouldn't cycle so I went back to the original load and seated the projectiles a little further out which brought my POI down.

It's been a pretty steep learning curve but now that I've got the load worked out reloading is a lot quicker than rifle. I can load about 100 9mm's an hour and that's going relatively slow

Fortunately not all mine  but I'm sure I've sent more lead down range than that getting this thing to work haha
