What is a large animal and what would you hit it with at up to 500, Franks?

I'd say hes referring to Wildebeest or Velociraptor.

To me large pigs to large deer & bigger. id probably use a .270 winchester 140gr or 30-06 165gr or 6.5 cm 140gr for knockdown power & speed at distance. I reload tho so i can use any bullet. U could do it with lots of other calibres, but id prefer those ones

Thanks for the reply. I personally think a 6.5 is not suitable for animals over 80 kilos at medium ranges, under 500 metres. I think a well placed shot not much past 200 would pull me up with that caliber.

I once shot a large pig at a little over 400 metres with a 378 Weatherby Magnum. I was pretty happy with the shot at the time and the terminal performance of the bullet was very effective. To be honest I could have stalked a little closer for an easier shot.

Is there a move to longer shots on game ? I too have suggested to hunters to stalk closer and some have said no - they’d prefer the longer shot to test their abilities. It presents a quandary- no one likes to witness injury or a slow death...
