7mm-08 or 308 for varmints?

Post by dayzmagnumhunter » 09 Mar 2014, 8:50 pm

Hello,

I was looking at buying another rifle. I was looking at shooting varmints and deer with the same gun.

I had a few people say the 7mm-08 and some say the 308 and I cant make a decision.

Thanks :D :) ;)

Either will do the job for deer. Both are overkill for Varmints.

I have a .308 and 7mm-08, I'd suggest you get the 7mm-08.

The 7mm-08 will have a fraction less recoil, but more usefully you can load lighter bullets for varminting which will still have a good BC.

This is what I do. I have a 120gr load for varmints and a 140gr load for deer.

The 120gr recoil is soft as, and to get the best accuracy out of my .308 I had to shoot 150gr pills. Long story short I've got a bad shoulder and don't need that extra recoil.

Either of my 7mm-08 loads though I can shoot all day long no worries.

That's my 2c.

If you wan't to shoot heavier stuff in the 7mm for whatever reason you can go up to 168gr bullets too.

You're not limited to light stuff.

If you're also going to be shooting deer or other bigger game I'd make my decision based on that, not varmints.

For varmints you'll be turning them to paste with either of those calibres.

I would choose neither of those if I was chasing varmints mainly, but still want something hard hitting. Go the 270, it will shoot so much flatter & you can bring it down to a lighter pill for varmints.
