New stock & barrel harmonics

Post by Jarhead » 08 Jul 2020, 4:43 pm

Hey there!

Has anyone noticed if getting a new stock changes your barrel harmonics?

I have been doing a lot of load development, getting great results and enjoying the process......will a stock change mean I need to do it again?
Regards,

Jarhead

I would think that the stock would only change the frequency that the barrel vibrates if it is touching it.

I changed a Tikka from a Tupperware stock to a Chassis and it shot the same load into the same size groups and no change in SD.

Just been through / going through now.
300win in houge stock - had load sorted and was shooting very nice.
Changed to MDT chassis - same load was okay but no where near previous.
Took a range of reloads to start development again and it appears - the best load now is .8-1.0 grains more powder.
Interesting to me - I tried to see where / how much of action was touching vs chassis / stock - as it seemed 1,0gns is too much for harmonics alone...but it is what I’m seeing...

Were the action screws torqued to the same weight?
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

Thanks all for the info!

That's one maybe, one absolutely not and 1 yes definitively. LOL.

SCJ429, I am changing a stock Tikka T3 Lite Fibreglass to MDT LSS XL Gen2. What calibre is yours? What Chassis did you move to?
Regards,

Jarhead

It was a Tikka Super Varmint in 223 and I put it into a GC Precision Development chassis.

I also put a Tikka Varmint in 22/250 into a GRS Bifrost stock and no change there.

My action screws have been “crunched” This time around as MDT do not recommend lictite but I’ve found in my 300, they come undone.

I use a drop of 222 Loctite on my action screws, it is the least locking thread locker and can be undone with hand tools with no heat.

All tread lockers and anti seize change the torque settings of the bolt as they lubricate the threads.
