Scope mounting height

Post by Adelaide » 09 Jul 2020, 1:49 pm

Hi I recently got a new Sauer 100 with a Leupold rail .The scope is a Zeiss conquest 3-12x56 and I was told to use 30mm High rings ( used the MDT highs) the gap between the bottom of the scope and the rail is 13 mm and ocular bell to rail is 12.5 mm. Estimated distance from between centre of scope to bore is 50mm. It appears a bit high. Can I or should I use medium or low rings?

Advice would be appreciated.

I needed high rings when I tried to mount a 56 on my old spotlighting rifle. You can buy high, check the clearance and then if it’s too high you can calculate the correct height rings for a lower sitting position ......or you can ask your local gun store if they mind trying a few sizes for you. I did this once and I was charged for the service but I’m cool with that. Then , if they have a few different heights available you can sort it in just one day instead of ordering stuff and hoping for the best .......quite tricky I think to guess it correctly the first time

Scope height is primarily determined by comb height or cheek weld.
If you don't have a cheek weld you should lower the scope, assuming you have room between the ocular and the bolt stroke.

Offset from bore axis generally doesn't matter.

l would say the gap is to much for me with a 56mm objective and when using a rail l would not have used high rings,
using a rail l use medium rings and have proper ring height
