LA105 Woomera for hunting.?

Post by CrackThump » 09 Jul 2020, 7:22 pm

Im cashed up, PTA is days away and Im shopping for a 308, for both bench (out to 800) and hunting... Im keen (decided) on Lithgow for reasons aplenty

Now... I KNOW, the LA105 is not a paddock rifle... but come on, Im in love with it...

So, opinions please, would you stalk game in the great outdoors with the holiest of holy from Lithgows modern catolouge.?

For the record, if Im honest, whatever I buy will be 80% target rifle, 20% hunting

Will you wish you had a 6mm or 6.5mm 80% of the time?

I'm not sure what you mean? Is it more difficult to load for a 243 or a 260?

These bullets would give you a ballistic advantage for longer range shooting. But if 308 is what you fancy, then go for it.

Taking a rifle only to the range is like only taking your dog to the dog park. A dog needs to chase real rabbits instead of just frisbees ....a real Australian rifle needs to be slung across a real Australian shoulder and carried thru the real Australian bush ......real dust, sweat and flies.

It’s 5kg bare with an empty mag. I’m going to say you’ll carry it once only.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

Totally up to you mate, no reason you couldn’t take it hunting however it’s quite a heavy long cumbersome bit of kit. Not sure you’d enjoy humping it around all day. Fantastic rifle no doubt however if you’re hunting as well and still want the Lithgow I’d go the LA102, still a bit of a target rifle and hunting rifle too.
Mate if it’s what you want though then go grab it and have a great time with it. Doubt you’d be disappointed.
Don’t discount 6.5 Creedmoor, just because it’s new (10 years ?) doesn’t mean it’s no good mate.

Go for it, you've obviously got your heart set on it. It's your rifle, do as you see fit. Is it a little unpractical? Perhaps but not if brings a smile to your face.

You have already made up your mind mate.
Just do it... Get the the .308 (I'd get one over a 6.5 everyday of the week)

Plus hunting doesn't have to be walking. Shoot from the ute, quad bike etc.

no l would not stalk game with it but it would not stop me from hunting with it
l use a couple of rifle's in or over the lithgows weight range successfully for sniping animals at good distances precisely
if you cant get close or you can shoot a bit further why not, it works for me :drinks:

The same thing was going through my mind last year. I might have even posted about it. Then I shouldered one at the shot show. You won’t use it to stalk. It’s a cannon. Using it from the back of the ute would be fun though.

I’ll be getting an LA102 first. Probably in 243. It’ll see time at the range and hopefully some comps.
Gotta get the 30-06 that just arrived setup before that though.

The la102 is a tank to carry around.
I wouldn't be carrying a woomera any further than to the cliff top to setup. I guess if you're not hunting in the high country it wouldn't be too bad but a lightweight setup is the way to go for me.

the 102 is ok (just) for a carry around, putting a safari style sling on it helps a lot

Get it then tell us how you went at the range and hunting. We want to know

I've shot next to a dude in the fly shoot with one in 6.5. They are a nice looking gun.

I like the LA102 in the laminate stock. If you want it a bit lighter then they have it with a fluted bolt:

I wussed out fellas. :unknown: . this cheeky little bugger was a full grand cheaper (local prices), defintely lighter and IMO just as sexy as the Woomera, and.. well, what can I say, Ive always been a sucker for a nice wood grain.

Welcome to my world, you well endowed walnut wench.

Gawd, timber is nice ain’t it. The woomera would no doubt drive tacks - but for what purpose? It’s an f-class gun.
