I have one in 223. I did replace the trigger with a Timney. The old trigger was a nightmare. The only issue you might have is with the 7mm-08 apparently being subject to throat length problems. The beauty of the 7mm is famous, but individual manufacturers have their own idea of what is a good throat length. Therefore as a re-loader you might have a longer throat than, say a Winchester, and the jump to the lands becomes problematic. I know a guy who has one, Rem700, he is not an amateur shooter, but calls his 7mm-08 all sorts of names at various times.

What about the 7mm Rem Magnum? Any throat issues there?

Honestly I know nothing re 7mm mag. My 7mm08 knowledge is only what I have read and gained in conversation with other shooters. That's why I said "apparently" mentioning the throat length issues. Its a beautiful calibre and if I didn't have the 308, the 7mm08 would be my next choice

Also, the 7mm08 is on a short action. The 7mm projectiles can be quite long. The short action magazines are not long enough to allow the proj to be seated long enough to meet the lands where the throat has been made long enough for the 7mm proj. Catch 22 sort of. If you had a 98 long action say 30-06 length, no problem.

Mate, I've had quite a few Rem700's over the years. My oldest is a 1972 manufactured 700 that I had rebarrelled to 223 after the old 222 barrel gave out. I've got new model 700's as well. I'm yet to find one that doesn't shoot outstandingly well. In fact my most accurate rifle is an SPS sporter in 243w. It's ridiculously accurate with 87 grainers.
My biggest gripe with the newer 700's is the dull black parkerised finish that they do. It makes the bolt feel rough and just feels gritty. Their triggers aren't fantastic from the factory but any gunsmith can make them darn nice for 50 or 60 bucks. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the "reputation" of QC issues. Having talked to a few gunsmiths (one of which does warranty work), none of them have noticed any disproportionately high number of 700's coming in needing repairs/alterations.

I agree with the above concern regarding the 7mm-08. If you get a Rem you really don't want to run anything smaller than a 140gr projectile because their throats are slightly longer. I run 162's in mine and it's unreal. It does have one advantage in that some other brands like Tikka can't fit 162's in their magazines so you have to replace the magazine and bolt stop to run it as a long action.

If I were to recommend someone buy any factory gun out there, it would be a Remington 700 VLS. They're gorgeous!

Thanks for all the input guys. I went to my LGS today with the intention of buying a Rem 700 SPS 7mm-08 and ended up putting a deposit on a Bergara B14 Ridge .308 in a MacMillan TAC3 stock.

And sales person of the month is...lol. A 308 vs 7mm...don’t look at the ballistics lol.
I also carefully checked out the begaras - they seem very decent by most accounts.

Yeah, the ballistics were definitely better on the 7mm08, but there were a few things that tipped me over. Ammo cost was a big one lol. Other factors were ammo availability, and the fact there’s so much load data and ballistics data readily available for the 308.
