Rem 700 rebarreled from 17 to???

Post by Timboon » 03 Nov 2020, 11:24 pm

G'day crew,

I've got a 17 Rem 700 That i'd guess was about a 1970's model ( is there any way to tell for certain? ) - Anyway after reading booomr's post about R700's it made me think I'm better off turning the 17 into something else rather than just flicking it for maybe $200....

223 I guess would be an obvious choice.

I don't want to spend a million bucks but if I got a good shooter at a reasonable price then I see it a worth while excersize!

Also does anyone know any smiths in the west that will cerakote it for me, the stock is in good nick but the action i'd give it a birthday.

Feel free to give me your thoughts,

Cheers

Is it a short-action and mag well, or a long-action?
.17Rem bolt face gives you a few options for a simple barrel swap - the obvious ones are .204, .223, .222, .222Mag, .22Nosler, 300BLK, .350Legend (not sure if it would feed), but there are numerous wildcats like 6x45mm, .24-45Sharps and .277Wolverine.

If you don't mind having to swap in a .308 bolt then the options increase dramatically, it'd probably be easier to list the ones that won't fit.

You don't want another 17? What about a 20 Prac or a 223 AI.?

I just bought a cz527 17 Hornet so I'd prefer going down another Rd. 223AI could be interesting, how much quicker does it push a proji than the standard 223?

The 223 AI is no big step up from the standard case but for me it turns it from a frumpy girl into a catwalk model.

The 20 Prac or the 204 are real hot rods if you are looking for speed. I must confess I have shot my 223AI more than my 204 but mainly because I use it as a training rifle.

My old Remington 700 17 I first rebarreled to a 6 x 45 shot 9000 rounds through that barrel and it was still holding .8MOA it is now on its 4th barrel .

The 6x45 sure sounds like a good option.

I guess one of the cons is not having any factory ammo around at all if needed.

Did not even consider that one as I haven't used any factory ammo in 25 odd years .

Would I do a 6x45 again no I would rather barrel with a number 5 or heavier one in 8 twist for 75 and 80 grain .22 calibre projectiles a lot more usable
