New Saiga 7.62x39, Mine At Last!!

Post by Eduardo » 28 Mar 2014, 11:56 am

I decided to pull the trigger (pun?) a bit earlier than expected. Anyway, I took it up to my range just to get in a few shots before the sun set. I ran through only 50 or so rounds before I had to hustle back but no way was I going to bed tonight without at least trying it out.

First impressions:

I really like it. The trigger was the worst part, but for some reason which I can't explain the hard ass trigger did not effect my accuracy as much as I thought it should. Even when I was abrupt with it, simulating a more "tense" situation. Iron sights came spot on sited in and are very visible. I didn't particularly like the far reach for my non-shooting hand to reach the forward hand-guard. You can immediately tell this rifle was not designed with a monte carlo stock in mind. My Dad was an Olympic marksman so I was raised having my left hand pulled closer in when shooting. I'll have to work on this.

That being said it was stupid fun to shoot, and shoot fast. I was shooting at a target at 50 yards with iron sights and was able to hit it consistently at near rapid fire pace(keeping in mind I'm not my Dad, i.e. I suck).

Bullet guide has been ordered. Next will be some spare AK mags.

This looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Wow. Jealous. I've been considering a saiga 12g but thought I'd get some cat a & b rifles first. So another 8-12 mths and I'll be putting in the app I reckon :) are you going to get the pistol grip and trigger job done on this one?

Trigger job yes, pistol grip no. Not legal in NYS. You know, because a pistol grip turns it into a death ray.

Just stay away from NY, NJ, MA, CT, CA, and MD and you'll be able to get the real thing instead of this sporter version.

I should be able to get some shooting in this weekend. I'll post up but it's got a decent reputation.

What I really want to do is kind of a side by side comparison with this versus my other "Not So Evil Black Rifles" like my SU16 and NYS Legal AR15.

TBH Canada is really where I'm interested in.

Edmonton in particular.

That's the plan anyway, still a ways off from reality.

Fook, I got cold just thinking about it.

JK, best of luck. I do most of my motorcycle trips into Canada. It's like a whole other country up there :D

You haven't lived until you've ridden a motorcycle through Banff and Jasper national parks.

Repeat after me...

G'Day Eh!

Well, due to screw up on my part I was only able to get off 40 rounds at the range, I actually ended up spending more time with my Glock but here's some preliminary results at 50 yards with wolf steel case ammo for the Saiga. Mostly I was trying to sight in the EOTech, I wanna try again with better ammo and a better bench rest. I would have taken it to our private range but it was pouring rain all day so I sprung for an actual range.

I probably need to spend more time sighting in the EOTech but thus far I am pleased with the rifles performance. There is plenty of room for improvement for me, not the rifle. It did fine.

These were my last few shots, and the closest I got to zero'ing in the EOTech

Banff is awesome.

So's Lake Louise, everything around there really.

Gotta say I thought Jasper itself was a bit over rated.

Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff etc. all within 2 hours of each other if I remember the drive right?

Jasper was another 4 on top of that? Not enough up there for the drive IMO.

I don't ski or anything though so I suppose there is that. If you were going for that, maybe it's awesome.

Thumbs up for Canada in general though.

I'll have you know that I did indeed remember to bring my ammo with me. In fact, I probably had 250 or so rounds.

I just forgot to bring the key to the lock on my ammo can.

Hahaha that's classic.

Gotta add the keys to my range list lol. One of the guys at my local range a while back forgot his bolt and just hung around talking to everyone coz it's 1/2hour out of town.... My bolt's are now on my range list. Tick em off everytime :)

Nice group there! I couldn't get that from a Mag58 on a tripod! Not much weight behind my guns unfortunately.
