G'day SHV,
The 7.62 conversions are usually good shooters, due to being 2nd line and Security issue only as Israel had adopted the FN FAL. Due to them coming from surplus stocks as well as new made they have a wide variety of markings which make them an interesting field of study, I have one with Swedish Inspectors stamps denoting it's former use as an anti-tank rifle converted back to 8x57 for Israel. Can you post pics of any side-rail and receiver marks does yours has? Cheers.

HA!! Beaten already!! You posted as I typed (slow typist)

G'day SHV,
Markings from the top photo,
Mod 98, Serial 3888/gg, (use of a double letter suffix denotes 2nd 10000 rifle block for that year), dents covering a German WaffenAmt, sometimes left most times not.
2nd Photo
dou, German wartime code for Waffenwerke Brunn AG Bystrica, (Brno's 2nd plant at Povaska Bystrica) year 1943, 7.62 overstamping German 7.92
3rd & 4th photo
On the receiver ring just above the wood are remnants of WaffenAmts ground off, on the barrel are Israeli caliber, proof and Inspectors marks denoting local made barrel.
In 1949 Israel purchased a complete K98k manufacturing line but due to adopting US M1, M1 carbine and the FN FAL SLR, they only made a few complete rifles, but the plant was used to make barrels for the 7.62 conversions. Cheers.

I've got one. Love to shoot it and have never shot as well with any other rifle with open sights.

One of the 5000 something Swedish rifles that were chambered in 8x63 Patron?

If so I'm jealous there are like a handful of originals in known existence even having a piece of one would be amazing...

G'day ThatNewGuy,
Yes, former m/40 A/T in 8x63 converted back to 8x57 for Israel then overlooked (or already overseas) during the 7.62 conversion era. It is a 147 (J.P.Sauer) 1940 with the S.S stamp of Inspector Sten Stenmo on the left side rail, serial in the high 6000's. I always tell owners or those looking for Israeli Mausers if they find a 1940 dated rifle by 147, 337 or 243 maker code to check the left side rail for the 2 letter SS or GB stamp just before K98 as other former A/T conversions are still out there somewhere though most will be 7.62 NATO, a very, very few will be 8x57 like mine, and who knows, maybe an 8x63 got overlooked? Cheers

Thanks for the advice ill be sure to look for that when I go and look for one as a german one is just heartbreakingly expensive in Aus.

I'm still beyond jealous of that insanely lucky find... If you ever want to sell it let me know and I'll be more than happy to take it :D

-NewGuy
P.S the last full M/40 for sale sold for nearly 30k apparently...
