They dropped on the spot without a twitch. That’s the attraction of a 45-70 , big energy transfer. I’m going to try woodleigh 225 round nose next as these should expand well and give a great exit wound. I would expect the 45-70 to be flexible on results according to bullet construction as well

I love playing with ballistics :D

45-70 does not have generally the explosive expansion of a faster bullet. That explosive expansion seems to only exist when pills are moving over 2000-2500 plus!
Something the 45-70 does not do unless pushed hard. But yes Speer do a thin jacket pill. I just use cast. Pure lead expands very well thank you.
It does leave a massive wound channel but will, almost always, exit with enough guts to take out the neighbor.
That has been my experience anyway.
One well placed shot is all it takes.

True, but 45-70 has the trajectory of a muzzle loading canon as range increases. Not saying it isn’t accurate, but judging distance becomes important

So maybe a better option would just be a 308 lever, either a Henry Long Ranger, which is no doubt scarce at the moment, or a Browning BLR. I’d even go down to a 243, no pigs around here, just Roos.

Hi shootermick
I find my 223 is all I need for Grass hopers within 200 meters.
I have various other calibres, used for larger game, but i find the 223 with 55gr V-max does all the small stuff with ease. I like the V-Max because they rarley exit and drops the quarry on the spot.
I have limited experince with lever rifles, I only have a 22 and the 45-70. Lot of fun thought. As for pump rifles, the last one was a 12 guage before we had to give them all back.
243 is also a good all round calibre. I just find it louder and i havent had any reason for the extra punch of late.
Happy shopping

Yep, that's why I suggested 30-06, 308, 270

I think shooter mick is just trying to justify buying another lever action.
