Ruger Scout Optics

Post by MeccaOz » 02 Apr 2014, 12:59 pm

Hi guys and girls,

Any of you Ruger scout rifle owners have any opinions on optics for it?

Did you go traditional, or scout style?

What glass did you end up topping it off with, if at all?

I just layed down a deposit for one and am scouring the web looking to see what's what.

Thanks for any input :)

I have a Gunsite Scout and for some time used the iron sights which are in fact excellent which I am sure you're aware.

I hunted one season with iron sights and in one occasion I did not feel confident that I could hit the vital organs of a white tail at the distance it was at so I did not take the shot.

I ended up doing some haphazard research and purchased the Leupold FX-II IER scope. Once I got it, I did not feel that at only 2.5X, it would have solved my problem. The magnification was still not good enough to help my increasing aging eyes. So I sold that scope and brought the Burris Scout 2-7x32.

I am far more confident now.

Thanks Eduardo, I was tinkering with the idea of leaving the opens sights on as thats all, But I'm the same, my eyes arent quite what they were, and I was thinking of the Leopold so I really appreciate the heads up on the Burris.

I used the iron sights for ages with good results and just recently put on a lynx red dot scope. It has no magnification so may not suit your needs but I've been shooting good groups with it and target acquisition is very fast

However, I did get a set of quick disconnect rings. So you have both options.

A mate of mine went with a traditional scope instead of the iron sights.

He cut out some of the teeth on his picatinny rail though so he could still mount the scope low without the rail getting in the way of the objective lens.

Still gives him the rail to play with a few accessories, and he can slight on a dot scope etc. if he feels like releasing the traditional one.

Going with a Scout setup comes down to personal preference mostly I reckon. And what you're doing with it of course.

You know the pros of course. Light, fast target acquisition, wide FOV, faster handling and reloading with the clutter free action etc.

If it's for a hunter rifle and you like all that, they can't be beat.

A lot of people just like a regular scope setup though as it's familiar.

Yeah I'm thinking of taking off the rail and going traditional, scope wise .. But For a while I'll try it open sighted I think and make a decision when a few more long eye relief scopes pop up and I get to try them. I have tried them on pistols and it works great, not sure it will be the same though.
