i was playing around with loads for my 243 today , it's a nice accurate caliber . my prefered caliber is a 270 . i load 150 sst's with re22 as a "do all" load . have you ever tried a 270 ? just looking for feedback on other peoples experiences .

Good Calibre and projectile for just about anything but if you were going to go after Sambar I would substitute the SST with a Woodleigh projectile it will put down anything you come across in the Victorian high country it is a very underrated caliber.

i've considered going to speer 150 hot cores . they don't spoil as much meat on deer , but aren't as flexiable on lighter game weight as sst apparently
i got my 270 sako 85 as a "all rounder" . it's stainless laminate, so any weather conditions are fine by me . i try to come up with one accurate load for this rifle as it's got to be able to handle anything . i like woodleigh's in my 358win , they fly straight expand well , and should flatten anything on the spot . dunno if their suited for distance in the 270 . if i was deliberately loading for sambar or heavier game , i'd use woodleigh or partitions i guess

Ive considered trying 180gn woodleighs in the 270 but after some reading I decided to give it a miss and just use the magnum with same weight bullet for nearly twice the hitting power.

I find mine handles everything except camels, well camels on the run anyway.

Now that I think of it, my browning A bolt was a very light rifle.

I had a play with one in 7mmWSM once and I concur with this statement.
Also worthy a mention is the Remington model 7 in 308 I had, very light, accurate, well made. Should have kept it in original condition and never sold it. Ah well.

The .270 is a great all round cartridge. I don't have one as I have 308 and 25/06. And I dont chase Sambar, just reds and fallow.

The Woodleigh bullets are a very good choice.

as i'm in queensland , the biggest deer i'm likely to encounter are reds . the 130 woodleigh would be more suitable for proper expansion than the 150 i'd imagine
also means i could come back to 2209 powder as well which would probably burn cleaner than the re22 i use with 150's :drinks:

From personal experience - any sporter in the following makes / models:
Sako 85
Tikka T3/T3X
Howa M1500

Calibres - forget the exotics - the plain vanilla calibers such as the 270 Win, 308 Win, 30-06 Sprg will deck any deer in Oz (and overseas ) with a suitable bonded bullet or monolithic bullet.

I've got one of those and it's a great pig gun, but I find chambering a round too noisy for stalking. Do you have a way around this?

Got my Remington 700 BDL in 25/06 some 32 years ago. Now on it's third barrel. It has shot everything from foxes, roos, donkeys, horses, camels, to fallow and red deer and buffalo. Different bullets for different animals.

Old 120gr Speer Grand Slams have worked a treat on the bigger stuff. 100gr Nosler BT is the usual load with 75gr V-Max on the light stuff.

I tried partition in this rifle as well as my 30/06 and they didn't group as well as the Grand Slams so they got the money from me.

For the scrub stuff on deer I would pick one of my Ruger Scouts in .308. For any situation I would go with my Tikka T3 Lite in .308.

But I do miss my old 30/06

I Just chamber a round and leave it on safety when stalking, You only get the one shot at a Deer in the bush; I also put a rubber band around the pump to help stop it from rattling when stalking hope this help

7mm-08 140gr NBT vs 6.5x55 Speer 140gr Speer hot core - haven't found a fallow that can tell the difference.
Me - I find the hot core better for "eating closer to the bullet hole", but if you don't hit either of the front shoulders no difference.

Okay, this is the 58.5 gn load in the 9.3x62. Both loads are crimped. I’ve had issues with my COL growing from recoil in my 358win to the point that the bullet would’ve been seated on the lands. Don’t think that’s good for pressure ;) I just full length resize and crimp in my heavy recoiling rifles from now on . Reliability over shooting tiny groups is more important to me

I got a 270 sako 85 in stainless laminate. Their a lovely bit of gear . However I wouldn’t be shy about using my 9.3x62 on a large red stag either :D
