These are a nice, handy, rifle. The 8x57 is a good hunting round also when loaded with an SP. These were a highly under-rated Mauser for many years which have more than doubled in value over the past 2-3 years, and nice to have! Thanks for sharing SHV, Cheers.

Thanks it’s really slim and short rifle, even shorter than the 98k, the bolt operation is really smooth

I have two M1904/39's and both shoot so well I went to a fair bit of effort to find a pair of original M1904's to go with them. Great rifles. The sights are miles better than Kar98k sights as well.

You have two 1904 and two 1904/39?
My one got a none matching bottom metal and trigger guard, how about yours? Is it normal when they change the caliber they change the bottom metal as well or they keep the original? Thanks

G'day SHV,
My 1904 is matching numbers, as is my 904/M39. During conversion the original barrel was shortened, reamed and rifled so often parts matched, but sometimes mis-matching parts occured as fitters just grabbed a box of parts and didn't bother to check if it was the right one, Cheers.
PS: If you want a bayonet, keep an eye on the serial numbers as they were matched to a rifle, unlikely to find the right one but you never know, a friend found one only about 60 numbers different.

Yes, two of each.
I rarely check whether part numbers match, I'm a shooter not a collector, but I'll have a look tomorrow.

Portuguese bayonet or a Kar98K one?
I don't have any Portuguese bayonets, when I went looking they started around $300 for fairly average ones.

Your S84/98 III bayonet is a bit long for the Vergueiro which used the original M1904 bayonets made by Simson of Suhl. They can be found around $200, but with patience. I had to pay $80 for mine when I bought it about 9/10 years ago and prices have jumped for some items. Still worth keeping an eye on fleabay and gunshows as one will pop up at the right price, Cheers.
