Schultz and Larsen M62

Post by Schultz » 19 Apr 2014, 4:59 pm

A Schultz & Larsen M62 in .243 Win has been in the family for decades, and now is in my hands.

Troubling thing is, I can't find any info on the date of manufacture for this rifle. Scoured the net and get the general non specific info.

Does anyone have a link or any reference that might shed some light on this?

Thanks.

They were only a small company so it's no surprise information is scarce.

What do you have beyond the model? However little?

Any accessories that you could use to date it?

Marks on the rifle? Anything at all?

They were produced from during the 1950's - 1970's I think.

Beyond that more info is needed to find anything.

Serial number maybe could help you track down a batch?

Here's a couple of pics.

Just fitted a new scope as the old weaver scope that was attached had suffered one to many knocks. Serial number is 7500.

The Rifle is in great condition overall.

Very nice condition.

An old mate of mine was a bit of an S&L buff in days gone buy. I'll try and get him on here to have a look for you.

Nice rifle. I think I've heard some of the earlier S&L rifles were rear locking. Is that one rear locking or a front locker?

Schultz and Larsen, made in Denmark.

M60 1957 -1960 in only 7x61 Sharpe & Hart.

M65 1960 - 1967 7x61, .358 and 308 Norma magnum.

M68DL 1967 very Americanised lots of calibres, doesn't say when finished.

M62 was available in America in 1960 in 6.5x55 and 308.

That's all the info my old books come up with.

Been doing too much working and not enough of the fun stuff lately.

Bobnob, it's a rear locker.

Cheers for the research Michael63, at least I now have some dates to go by. I wouldn't have thought it so difficult to trace a manufacture date, given the serial number!

Getting warmer tho.

I know I'm bit late in getting a reply to you but I only came across this forum today. Your rifle is certainly NOT a Model 62. The M62's were the Free Rifle competition rifles specially produced for 300 metre shooting in either .308 cal, or 6.5x55mm. A slightly smaller version was made for 50m shooting in 22r/f cal.

Both disciplines involved shooting in the prone, kneeling and standing positions, and I have both models; having been a 300m and a 50m competition shooter.

Getting back to your rifle, I think it is the Model 65D "D" for "delux". I have the same rifle - but not the "D" version; in 7x61 Sharpe & Hart magnum.

The Model 65 commenced production in November 1959 with s/n 6757. Production finished in July 1965 at s/n 11276. My s/n is 72xx and was made in September 1960. I ordered it direct from the factory fitted with a low-mount 4x81 Pecar. It is still capable of shooting 5-shot half-inch groups off the bench at 100yds, and to my way of thinking, the 7x61 is a far better cartridge than the 7mm Remington Magnum. Both rifle and cartridge fell out of favour because it could not compete with home-grown rifles mass-produced in America.

If you would like to post here the first three serial numbers followed by an x or two, I will give you the exact date when your rifle was made.

Hope the above is of some help.

Hi Sha,
Our friend with the S&L probably gave up waiting for a positive reply, which is a shame. I had missed his S/N until now, which is 7500. That means his rifle is definitely a model 65 without the "D" and was made in October 1960, And as you say, it's in excellent condition for a rifle that was made close to 55 years ago!
Mine is as good, if not slightly better, as the photo shows, but it's a shame he didn't take advantage of the bolt design, which allows the bolt handle to extract a cartridge at almost 90 degrees to the vertical. That means you can have a very low mounted scope - instead of something that looks like a chook on a perch, Haha!
Still a very desirable rifle today - made by the original Schultz & Lasen family - that would readily bring $1,500 to $2,000 on a good day.

On another note, I see that you have a nice Savage collection. I had a left-hand 110 with a 308W Shillen barrel fitted and stocked up by the late Jack Millar in the style of a 300m competition rifle. Bought it in 1971 for I.S.S.F. Competition. Wore out the action and barrel by1993 which was then traded in as a deposit on a Steyr SSG Marksman 7 PH in 308W. Worst thing I ever did!

They keep me happy that's for sure :D

Love the Savages. My .22 WMR was my first rifle, love it and bought the .308 next. Just as happy with that and .17HMR came along so gave that a go too.

All have been good :)
