New Howa Short Action only 4lbs 7oz

Post by Bill » 16 Jan 2022, 6:14 pm

Wow I was just checking out the new 2022 LSI Howa range of rifles when I noticed they have listed a new Super Lite rifle with a new Action in between the Howa Mini and the Standard Short Action with only a weight of 4lbs 7oz.

Way to go Legacy Sports International, Id love to see this sold as an action only, be a great donor for a few new builds  :drinks:

That is extremely light. Does it include the stock?

Wonder if a 223 is on the way? I might consider letting a few moths fly for a 223 that light.

No,partially right. The 4lb 7oz action is the mini action, comes in 223,7.62x39,6.5 grendel, and 350 legend.
Don't understand why not 300BO.
Other more potent calibres are available but on larger and heavier actions.
Looking at around 1k USD so going to be pretty expensive here.

Yes.

I'm thinking it would make a fine stalking rifle once iron sights are fitted.....

Soo, just did some basic checks. That would be about 2lb lighter than my bare bones Marlin 223 xl7. How do they manage that?

Yeah good question.
All I can think of is good use of plastic, carbon fibre and alloy. Coupled with big holes in small barrels.

Pretty much LawrenceA but I think they may have take some meat out of the action too by slimming the receiver and making the dimension more like a the Mini action, I wonder if they have also gone with the smaller lugs like on the mini too...

Probably as well as fluting bolts and normal weight reduction milling of excess material on the bolt and maybe the receiver.

Time will tell

2.098kg dry in 308.

That's about 28 ftlb of recoil energy with a typical 165gr load at 2640fps. Slightly less than my K95 in 30-06. So it going to be jumping high off the bench.

I know, I know. It’s outrageous. But there’s always the possibility of not shooting off the bench?

Fair enough. But it can be beneficial to sight your rifle the way you mostly intend on shooting it. All my zeroes are different depending on my stance. You can always just go lean on a fence post and get a zero  - I bet it’ll be plenty good enough for bagging game and probs better reflective of how you naturally tend to shoot in the field. One doesn’t need to overcomplicate the humble hunting rifle. Just my 2c.

Nice and light. From memory my plain-jane American Ranch* 308 is 7lb unloaded with the standard 4 round rotary mag and 4-12x40 Leupold up top.

My Citadel Levtac '92 in 44 mag is 5lb 12oz with a Burris RT1 red dot up top, heh.

I'm not seeing anything about a "new" shorter action, this is the standard Mini-Action.

Looking at the Howa site though, the Carbon Stalker weighs 2100gm in the Mini Action, in the Short Action it's 2800gm, which is what this rifle appears to be in 6.5CM/.308.
The advertised "4lb 7oz" is for the Mini Action, it's 85gm lighter than the Carbon Stalker but still stuck with the lightweight chamberings.
