96 is a rear locking action, 98 front. They are fairly similar, the 96 will feel smoother to cycle, the 98 will handle higher pressures. The actions were first adopted in 1896 and 1898.

Hmm, the 98 was chambered in 7.92×57mm, right?

The 96 was chambered in 6.5×55mm which is a long action also?

The M98 was designed to be a safer action.

Yoshie has mentioned handling higher pressures as one thing. I can't remember other specifics sorry, but I believe the designed tweaks all revolved around making it a stronger/safer rifle.

I think you guys are creating the disinfo gun news network or something...

The 96 is NOT rear locking...similar length action
96 - cock on closing & small barrel 'ring'

98 - cock on open, improved rear bolt shroud (safety, gas) improved gas porting, Large barrel 'ring'

Third or safety lug is not a rear lock - its a last resort to save your face/life...

1898 has overall much better safety features, though many are chambered in high pressure rounds, 6.5x55, up to various mauser derivative Xx57, 9.3x62 very popular...

If you have a choice, I'd start with an 1898

Different action length in both of those of course.

.308 and 7mm-08 are the same except for the neck of course. 30-06 is a longer cartridge and action.

If you're definitely going to re-barrel it do 7mm-08 I'd get the .308. Less work required I believe as the barrel will more or less 'drop in'.
