Good morning all,

My name is Gary Jones and I am just getting back into the world of shooting ... well, in some instances anyway.

I am a current serving ADF member so I am regularly at the range doing shoots.

I am however looking at getting back into competition shooting with Pistols. I used to do it when I was a kid with the parents, even went to a property near Ravenswood where we used to hunt feral pigs, goats etc.

In the process of getting my licence and it has changed somewhat from what I can remember, that's for sure.

I am looking for a bit of advice though, what is the process with Interstate transferring of Licences and weapons? Being an ADF member, I am regularly posted around the country and where I am currently posted to, I don't get out as much to the range here, so can't ask for advice from the staff there and no one in my office shoots either.

Also looking to improve my Pistol shooting as I am absolutely atrocious with the Browning ... Might stick to the Glock!!

Thanks and best regards,

Gary

I don't have my handgun licence but I got my rifle licence while in the ADF, from what I understand from mates being posted interstate you need to get a new licence for each state. Your best bet would be to go to the police station and ask there. I'm sure they could tell you anything you need to know.

Yeah new licence each time you move, for what it's worth I think ACT is best state for transfering in and out of. I've held both ACT and QLD act H and been a new members coordinator in ACT were we have NSW members. Where are you located??

How often do you move?

How long do you stay in each state when you go?

Do you return to your "home" state after the postings?

It could be tricky with your licensing as not all states recognise other states licenses. Your shooters need a regular storage location. That sort of thing...

Laws are different state to state of course.

Some recognise a out of stand licenses from some states but not all. e.g. I think you can Shooting VIC or NSW on either license.

WA doesn't recognise out of state licenses though I think?

Double check those but you get the idea.

What state are you currently in? Where to next?
