Fav Round for Weatherby Vanguard 223

Post by CT hillbilly » 01 Aug 2022, 6:27 am

So a mate rings me last night wanting to sell his rifles both Weatherby Vanguard SS in 223, just so happens I'm looking for something to put my NV scope on for Wild Dog's and Cats and asking $250 each why not one has only had 10shots through it. (i bought both one for a mate)
he has just started Roo shooting and couldn't get them grouping tight enough for his accuracy test so his off to buy a Howa 1500Varmit in 223? each to there own i say!
Those out there that use the humble 223 what rounds do you find work (group) the best??? understanding that every rifle likes a certain type of round? even with the one shot zeroing function on the NV I would like a good consistent round any ideas??? pill wieght ect?

Mate I make my own however I have used the Aussie Outback 223. It has a 55gn Sierra Blitz King projectile and they shot well under an inch in my Tikka T3X.

Pretty sure Dj gets clover leaf groups with ppu in his howas. And from what I can gather weatherboes are sort of howas

Yep No,,,,, I get good results from PPU but not anything spectacular.
Good enough for dogs/foxes at average ranges.
I did buy a sh!tload of PPU in both 223 and 308 (with the latter intended for pigs) a fair while ago, before the ammo crunch got serious.
Cleavers had em out ridiculously cheap back then.

The stuff I get the clover leaf performance out of in the Howa 22/250 is surprisingly,,, the humble Highland 22/250 55gr SPs
The other was Winchester 45 gr JHPs @ their claimed 4,000 fps. They were devastatingly good,,,, but I've ran out of those.

I do get very similar results from my Howa 223  :D
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!

Bloody do gooders are trying to f$#k the gun laws here gives me the sh$ts anyway thats my rant?

You could try some heavier stuff if the 55s aren’t performing to your satisfaction. Good luck

The heaviest bullets in .224" I'm aware of are 95gn, but they need 6.5" twist. 8" twist will run bullets in the 80gn to 85gn realm. The heaviest factory ammo I've heard of is 77gn, but it's loaded to AR15 magazine length so is velocity restricted over what you can get out of a bolt rifle.

You don't need to go target heavy, as Blade detailed, but maybe try a 69gr-based cartridge? Or perhaps go into the 70s with the Hornady offerings? Horrendously expensive - but it may demonstrate what the rifle is capable of.

The 223 is generally not a difficult cartridge to get to group - i'd be surprised if you can't find something that will shoot very well through it.

My 5.56mm baby is also a 1:8". The 69gr SMK is my bread-and-butter for service rifle shooting - fantastic all rounder with good performance out to 300m, and really not too expensive (handloads). Here's the 69gr at 500m:

The wind was being a little tricky, as shown by the disconnect between my calls and the fall. If I were using the 80.5gr, my group would have been a little better.

What length can you load them to in the No.4 Rifle?

If I wanna run the (mini14) mag, they can't be more than 2.256". If it's a slow fire, I can single feed longer fullbore loads. From the sling, Is there much difference between the 69gr and 80.5gr at 300m? probably hard to detect. 55grainerss get hurt at 300m though, with a bit of weird wind.
