I just picked up my 5R 223 last week. I don't have it scoped yet so haven't been to the range so far.

quality of finish is high and the stainless barrel and jewelled bolt look hot. working the bolt is fairly smooth considering it will smooth with usage. I cycled a few snap caps through it and it all feels very nice.

I considered the t3 and also a howa varmint and some of the other R700s. I decided to spend the extra and get the 5R as it will mainly be used as bench/range and all reports are that they have very good accuracy (I need all the help I can get). I registered my warranty online and also did the serial # check and mine's subject to recall at some stage. the guy at the gun shop (Abela's in Sydney) said they are going to get a trigger-smith in to do the Rem recall work, they'll let me know.

so far I have no regret with my purchase. I hope to get some rings and a scope in the next two weeks then hit the range.

Not bagging the Remington but I do have to say I think they're a little expensive.

Your T3 Varmint will shoot good! Have no doubts in that.

Personally I would go the T3 and spend the extra on glass.

Again, not bagging Remington for any specific reason. That's just one Tikka owners opinion.

What do I think about the Milspec in 223? How about this?

This was just me working up loads wi the 75gr Amax before I ran out and couldn't get more. Easily capable of .5MOA, I'm hoping I can improve further and get it down to .25MOA.

5 shots at 100m, very calm day.

Yep, they'll shoot.

Just a little expensive IMO.

One thing in favour of good glass is it will last you forever.

If you change rifles or calibres down the road you can always move over a good scope.

Can't go wrong with that ;)

Have you handled them both yet? They feel quite different IMO.

Get to your LGS and handle them both and that'll give you a step in the right direction too.

Nice shooting HOC.

To newgunner, the Tikka could shoot just as good as this. I'd get down and see which one your most comfortable on and make your decision there.

Agree that good glass is never a waste too.

+1 to that. The Palm swell on the stock of the 5R is quite chunky. Great for bench if you have medium to large hands but might not be for everybody.

Palm swell is a tricky one.

It's as good as it gets if it fits you're hand well.

Can make gripping the stock feel quite off if it's the wrong shape.

The Tikka Forest has the palm swell stock doesn't it, Lorgar?

How do you find that?

Yes it does.

It's actually a little too big for my hand to grip is "properly" with the swell dead centre in my palm, my hand sits high on it.

The particular contour is still comfortable for me though so it's all good.

I chose the Forest stock more for the folded cheek piece than the grip specifically.

Still fits me though so :)

I didn't think the Forest came with a fluted barrel?

It doesn't

He combined a Hunter Stainless Fluted action with the Forest stock.
