No.5 style No.4 short rifle

Post by SHV » 10 Nov 2022, 10:11 pm

It’s a savage NZ No.4 modified short rifle, a bit longer than the real No.5 and drilled tapped on the receiver but for 500 dollars you can not ask too much nowadays

500 doesn’t include the millimeter style rear peep sight
The barrel is good rifling is sharp and bright I reckon it still worth the money
It got 2 SN numbers on both receiver and bolt handle

OK, I'll try another way.
Are you going to sell this project without the rear sight. (millimeter / micrometer, whatever) ??

The No5 Mk1 certainly was military issue but not in such prolific numbers as the No1 Mk3 or the No4 Mk1.
The correct rear sight was marked with maximum range of 800 yds.

I absolutely love it that beautiful baby from the happy marriage of a No4 and a No5!

Was never a military issue of course. But I would have bought it nonetheless!!

You will have to tell us how it shoots!!

It probably shoots better than most No5, no lightening cuts to the action so shouldn't have the Wandering Zero issues of many No5's. It really is a nice copy of the No5 and I would also be happy to have it at that price.

My No5 shoots mint, far better than my essentially brand new Savage No4. The zero hasnt shifted either.
I reckon "wandering zero" is a myth, Peter Laidler never found anything more to it than they grouped like s**t when they got hot, no formal documentation exists from the British beyond soldier complains in Malaya about accuracy and they deemed the issue inherent with the design but never elaborated but hey, this new SLR rifle looks good.

The Americans genuinely thought a full auto M14 was a good idea to replace a sub machine gun and that the FN FAL was junk, in 1935 France decided the Browning Hi-power was crap and went for their own single stack 8 round pistol instead.

I am glad you're happy, SHV but the sight of that buttplate terrifies me
Years ago; at least 50 when the No. Fives appeared on the market, I had exactly the same reaction. All the best mate and I hope it is much kinder than it looks :)

A bloke I knew years ago was on the HMAS Melbourne in the early 1950's was was tasked with throwing cases containing hundreds of No 5's and ammunition overboard to dispose of them.

He said they were supposed to leave Sydney Harbor and do it in open ocean, but as the ship was getting shore leave when they were finished the whole lot ended up been thrown off the ship while it was still docked in Sydney.

I sometimes wonder if any of them would still be sitting down there in the mud in one piece.
