Anyone have a remington 700 sps tactical 223

Post by newgunner » 10 May 2014, 5:06 pm

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone owns a Remington 700 SPS tactical in 223 or has owned or shot one?

Need to know if they are reliable and accurate?

Thanks.

Have shot one.

Yes they are reliable and yes they are accurate, at least from my experience.

I'm assuming you're looking to get one?

Yes I am looking at buying one.

They are pillar bedded and have a very heavy barrel, and all the reports i hear are very good and the 1:9 twist rate is perfect

I was going to buy a Tikka Varmint in stainless, but these are cheaper and probably better?

Thanks.

Although I like Remington better, Tikka are a bit more consistent out of the box. From my experience, while most Remington's are GREAT out of the box I have seen 2 duds that couldn't shoot anywhere near as well as they should have. I can't say the same for Tikka.

Although I'd still go with Remington as I like them more and they just do more for me. Both great guns though so up to you. As you said the twist rate is spot on and they are good quality.

If you were to buy the Remington though I would upgrade the stock and maybe put a different trigger to get to its full potential.

My mate's ones in .204, .223 and .243 are all sub-moa straight out of the box

Often better too with a little work.

A lot of guys reporting .5 MOA with some load testing.

(work on loads, not on rifle, that's still stock accuracy I'm talking about.)

Haven't owned one, but shot one that belonged to some bloke at the range.

Just having a shoot for fun, swapped benches for a few minutes.

Can't tell you his load data but he was getting small clover-leaf groups at 100m with it.

Hey mate,

I have the .308 not .223, but as the guys have said it shoots clover leaf groups all day long.

Works as a bit of a bench/hunting combo for me. Mostly bench.

Don't have the SPS but have the 5R Milspec instead. Definitely accurate (under 1/2MOA) and a quality rifle all around. Compared to the SPS it has a different stock and 5R rifling, but that's about it.

I think it's safe to say you can expect less than MOA.

Plenty of people getting 0.5 - 0.75 MOA without much effort.

The 1 MOA is a generous buffer IMO just to cover them.

Suppose if you give a rifle a 0.5 MOA you get people returning rifles that shoot 0.51 MOA.

Turning away a perfectly good shooter because they're too fussy.

So having a lot of people speak for the accuracy of it at 100 how does it go at 200-300?
