7mm Remington magnum vs 300 Winchester magnum for sambar

Post by AussieMadman » 10 May 2023, 10:03 am

now then. yet another controversial question. i'm sure i'll get just as many different opinions as i will responses. but anyway - going after sambar deer at medium to long range, what would you choose? also considering things like the availability of bullets, seeing as the 300wm can take the standard .308 bullets that the .308 and 30-06 use but the 7mm rem mag needs...7mm bullets. has anyone had difficulty getting reloading components for the 7mm?
anyway - thanks in advance.

At long range it's probably not sambar
Might be a camel. Maybe a donkey.
Won't taste the same.

I would imagine that any decent calibre in that realm would be adequate for the job provided you used the right load

I have found across any application that projectile choice is about a hundred times more influential on outcome than calibre choice

Sambar aren’t great fans of being shot at long range. They have way better ears, eyes and sense of smell than we ever will. And they hide really well. Hence stalking or using dogs is how most are shot in Aus. None of which happens at long range. Re 7mm RM vs 300WM, imo 7mm stings the shoulder a bit less.

I would lean towards the 300WM because of more projectiles choice , Both have precision dies available to help accuracy hand loading . Both would do a similar job but the 308 throat would last a bit longer in a big case full of slow burning stick powder . The 300 WM does have a bit more recoil overall but it also has slightly better ballistics with the heavier bullets . I notice that 7mm bullets are now all sold out on Sierra website but 308 is still available , so why that is I am not sure .

Never had any difficulties getting 7mm projectiles but I do notice .308 projectiles are on special quite often, if that influences you. I really like the 7mm Rem Mag but if I rebarrel I would chamber it in 300 WSM, better case, more efficient.

The 300 WSM is about the best of the Winchester short magnums and pretty much equals the 300 WM using less powder . So it's another option but it's loads are at a higher pressure level .

I have a 7mm remington magnum first rifle i bought after being told to shoot nothing larger than a 243. I find it has no more recoil than my 308 and a fair bit better down range ballistics than a 308,30-06.

Great calibre manageable recoil brass may be a little harder to find but personally i think its a well mannered cartridge.
