I worried a bit about that when I started shooting tikka's too. I've used a few fluted barrels and 'lite' models with mates.

Jumping aside they still hit the mark :)

Been target shooting most weekends for about 6 years and only hunting for a year or two. Mostly small game with the .22 and the odd pig with the 7-08 but I'm looking at my hunting opportunities for deer, goats and pigs and realised carrying the tikka varmint is not a great prospect for spending the day hunting on foot.

I've also uplifted for the NSW national parks hunting program and NPWS will only allow factory ammo ( 7-08 could cost upwards of $3 a round ) and will provide free ammo for volunteers from their armoury ( only .22lr, .22mag, .223 and .308. ) so a .308 is the obvious choice, free .308 or $60 a box 7/08

artimu, I've only ever used 2 piece rings but these are cheaper and lighter than my steel rings of choice ( warne ) and should stop me removing the scope every five minutes

Ha ha.

What's removing them about? OCD about keeping it clean?

Fair enough if they're lighter.

Only factory ammo hey. Well that sucks.

I wouldn't mind paying for my own ammo, but my hand loads are 90c a pop (with hunting projectiles).

Bugger paying $3 per for factory ammo.

Yeah mate.

7mm 140gr BT. 2208 powder, CCI BR2 primers roughly 90c per shot.

A few cents more or less depending on brass life, but close enough...

Or do what others do, fit a steel DBM, pic rail, alloy bolt shroud, tactical bolt knob, 10 round mag and a 56mm high mag tactical scope.

Let's see if it can hit 10lbs. Lol

Nah this ones staying light. The only mod I might do is if it looks like a bit of hunting in a rough or wet environment I might throw it in a synthetic varmint stock I have spare just to preserve that nice timber a bit

Looks great and an interesting discussion as well! I haven't seen that sort of mount before. I love the stainless and timber look.

Hmm, no point protecting it if you're not using it.

I like the walnut a lot. Not so much synthetic...

I'd live with a little wear and use the nice stock all the time ;)

and? how does it shoot? is he happy with in?

the same rifle in .284W or even .280 AI would make an excellent Sambar rifle IMHO but i'm a 7mm fan, i suppose a .270 or 30-06 would too

It shoots like a lazer beam. He uses 130g Hornady SST doesn't bother hand loading for it because its just so dam a curare with that ammo.
From memory it was doing a 3 shot 1" group at 200m strait out of the box.
He owns 4 Tikkas al left handed so I guess he is happy with them.
I have just talked him into buying a 243 Sako 85 Hunter took me months but we got there in the end.

Hey Scott, I'm not sure how many people are aware but the NPWS staff associated with the joint SSAA SPC program are the same staff that already undertake pest control in the parks, mostly ex pro shooters or commercial pest controllers them selves, they're all shooters themselves and all good people in my experience.

You're point is valid, you could possibly get away with loading your own and putting them into factory packaging but why bother? They tell you what ammo they will be using in advance and hand out ammo on the day of the shoot free. Unused ammo is returned and logged but I'd rather shoot theirs than mine.

There's one very good reason why you should bother and that is your rifle is sighted in for your ammo, how the hell do you know where their ammo is shooting, it could be shooting left, right, high, low - it sounds like a really dumb idea to me - makes no sense whatsoever.

Taking the thread far off topic, I'm sure you already know my opinions on this from other forums but I'll say it and I'll stop there.

Not sure why you say that. The shoot plan for the shoot I went on near Griffith specified for example Remington .308 150gr sp ammo would be supplied.

I simply bought one box and zero'd my rifle for it. Not an issue for 90% of shooters to do that in 10 mins at the range.

It's a government regulation relating to WHS not an insult to anyone's hand loading skills.

The program has its flaws, there's hoops to jump through, boxes to tick but for those without their own hunting block or access to land its one option. The biggest roadblock to its success it the ignorant knockers who want to shoot it down without being prepared to be a part of it. I've met some very experienced hunters with their own deer, goat, pig and fox blocks who are enthusiastic to make the program succeed and hopefully expanded after the three year trial.

For me it's an opportunity to learn from those people, see some parks and towns I wouldn't otherwise visit and spend a weekend out of Sydney, in the bush, with my gun.

I have no idea what your talking about here sorry. As for the Rem ammo and going out and buying a box before going hunting, all good if you can get it but what happens if you can't, do you just hope for the best and hope it doesn't result in wounded animals? I just think its a weird ideology but each to their own.

Anyway how did the shoot go - what did you shoot and how many?
