Noob to forum. Rekindled passion I almost forgot I had...

Post by KWhorenet » 17 May 2014, 5:17 am

Hi all,

Grew up in Tassie hunting for as long as I can remember. Now getting back into the saddle after a 20 year career got in the way. Now that's coming to an end and I've settled in Gippsland Vic with my own property (that came stocked with foxes). Time to help native fauna and my chooks survive.

Also having poachers shoot from the road at the handful of deer I own, leaving me to go stalk & finish them off with a kitchen knife when wounded, only makes it a requirement I guess. Not joke there are scum who do this! I'd like to remove their trigger finger if I get hold of them.

PTA went in WITH licence App. Of course me being me while looking for a 270W I have to go and find a couple that are 9.3x62 with the 270W barrel spare also which I am sold on the option. Doh! Presume another PTA will be needed orrrr swap back to the 270W barrel ?

Had better at least grab the .22 on this first PTA if n when approved so I don't have to wait another 28 days if the 270W/9.3x62 goes pear shaped.

Cheers,
K

Confused about this poacher bit...

Not that it would make it any better... but they don't even take them for trophies?

They just shoot them and leave? WTF?

Thanks Westy.

Old fart- Cops and progress? haha sorry I don't have any expectations since being robbed and being told I'd never see my gear again. Theft and morons in this area seems too normal.

Creet- "Confused about this poacher bit..."
I'm sure some have been taken in the past when I was posted away from the area. Some dikchead tampered with fencing to allow escapes. I've found 2 dead bucks that were clearly gut shot and a dead buck with antlers cut off a while ago. This year during the rut I found an older doe alive with her shoulder shot and pulverised insides. Exit wounds out her ass (guessing HP). Presume she hobbled off as best she could.

Thieves and people like this remind me why dogs are mans best friend...

They need more than that removed.

G'day.

Welcome back to everything :)

Sorry about your poacher problems. Hopefully the bastards fall over in a forest somewhere... See how they like crawling home for hours with a hole through their leg.

What ever calibre it ends up being needs to be on the paperwork.

If originally applied for one then you rebarrel/rechamber to different calibre the dealer/gunsmith will update paperwork with registry for you.

Sucks that that's the way it is.

My house was robbed a few years ago and same story. Never heard a peep from the police after they took prints etc. on the day.

Low priority on the list I'm sure.

Thanks all that have spoken.

Bit excited about going shopping again. Apart from the $$$$ or possibly $$$$$ !! Reminded my gf it's like shoes and Tiffany's for blokes so shhhh.

Different game now I guess...Safe was the wardrobe, Ammo came by the case not box/packet, Dies were what mum hid stains in my clothes with and reloading was what I did when mags were emptied, Licence and permits...huh? :P Oh and apparently NO 'plinking' on my own farm wtf ? Lame!

Scrolllock: Thanks for the tip... Just a cheaper way to have another calibre for one NT trip a year.

99% sure you're allowed to sight-in on your property there in VIC.

So yeah. Check you're sighted in whenever you're expecting to go hunting soon ;)

I believe(?) the no plinking thing relates more to operating a range on your property.

You're not allowed to have any permanent targets in place.

Not allowed to people pay to come use your property for target shooting purposes etc.

Like harper said you can sight in. Same as for state forests, there is no fixed limit on how much you can shoot there but it's written as something like 'a reasonable amount'.

If you're sticking a cardboard target up now and then and putting half a box through to keep the gear and your skills up I can't see there being an issue.

Welcome back!

It's surprisingly addictive.

Very upset to hear about the poachers shooting your deer, that makes me so angry.

Yeah the poaching thing is s**t.

I hadn't realised that was really an issue here in Aus.

Shame they can't do more about it.

Worst thing is I can't help but think of semi local lads knowing when I'm not around.

I've flushed out one person on a quad bike on the crown land next to my farm only 100m away. He idled off into the scrub before I could get to him. But I wouldn't be surprised if people who come from the city for their holiday shoots get too excited by seeing them and want to test out their gun/loads.

People who can't hunt for s**t take the easy shots too I guess. So sporting of them with 2m high fences keeping farmed animals within range and view.

Track cams are on order.

Do those things have to be registered?

Any chance of a plate number or something to have over to the authorities?

Yes, except... Found this on DSE website.

Legal requirements for trail bike riding on public land

If you are registered, licensed and stay on formed road and tracks you are welcome to ride on the forest roads. If you are unlicensed and unregistered you are limited to private land or motorcycle club venues.

Trail bike riders, like all other vehicles user, are required to follow certain legal requirements. Significant fines can be issued to trail bike riders if caught breaking the law in State forests, parks and reserves. To avoid the inconvenience and costs of fines and prosecutions, do the right thing and make sure you:

  • Hold a current motorcycle licence (or learners permit) and your bike is registered and roadworthy
  • Are 18 years of age or older
  • Quad bikes (ATV's) can not be used on public land as they can't be legally registered for road use as they do not meet relevant safety standards

If he was on a quad bike looks like he shouldn't have been in the state forest anyway... And obviously not sneaking onto K's property...
